I agree, totally neat. I've never made one, but might try if I get a lathe soon... I'm actively shopping, and ready to pull the trigger soon if I find the right machine.

I've seen a neat cube made on an EDM machine. The square shaped graphite electrode was machined with a large ball end mill which was the same diameter as the width of the electrode. The electrode was plunged down into an aluminum cube, from each side, leaving a sphere inside of a square box. Pretty neat.

notice the slick turret setup the guy has on his lathe!!!

I need to make one of those for my lathe...

It allows for repeated tooling paths..

I used to carve stuff similar those out of a solid block of ivory as a kid... never new what they were called. It took forever...

Sorry, no pics, it was a couple of years ago and I was just fooling around, saw the exact same page elsewhere and wanted to try haha. IIRC, it broke :(

It's hard making it with just a drill press compared to a CNC but it can be done if you measure lots of times before drilling and make sure its in the right position.
