Hey guys! New here. Been a long time coming to getting my parents garage in a workable order. Thought Id start build thread and document it.

Im turning 31 soon and have just found out my dad has prostate cancer, so its hit me pretty hard about "Hey knucklehead!! Time to really get your **** together!".

He, nor me, has had a real place to work on stuff(me on my toys/cars and him on his woodworking) without moving a bunch of stuff out of the way, its really disorganized in the garage. 90% my fault and we just have a bunch of stuff(dad doesnt like to throw stuff away..... :dunno:)

Its a 30'W x 35'L garage. 2 garage doors, 2 man doors(back one is double door), 3 windows.

Started trying to get my tools all organized first then I can really start laying stuff out. Already have a lot of ideas from reading others' build threads!! Great forum! Any ideas you guys wanna throw out, post em up!!!

I wanna give my dad a shop to work in again, we had a 20x25 barn he built at our old house. I know its cliche to want to start to work once you hear something health related with a family member, but now after having it happen to me, it really puts a foot in the *** to get going. Time could be limited.

Very sorry to hear about your Dad's health concerns. I think this decision to make the garage a project will help keep you both occupied and engaged in something positive. My advice is to purge. Purge as much as you can. I would also put pen to paper and draw out a plan. It sounds like you will be looking for different "areas" to do different types of work. Coming from a 24' x 24' garage, I think you have ample space in your garage to accommodate a number of different zones. I think everyone will agree, that a thorough plan at the beginning will make things tick along a lot smoother than tackling it head on. Hope that helps, and my best to your father.

Agree with Rick. Take as much advantage of the time with your dad now while you can, and purge as much as you possibly can, that will make things a lot easier. I spent a while detailing the organization out for my garage on paper and changed it 1000 times but without it I cannot imagine how much of a mess it would be.

Thanks for the words guys! Thats what Ive suggested a lot, gettin rid of some stuff. But we all know "you never know when you may need it". It is a lesson I learned from my dad but "Dad, sometimes you just gotta let it go". lol

I do want a welding area, work bench(that stays clean), wood work area, machining area, project area.

Better grab some graphing paper lol.
