It's abundantly obvious someone's favorite pass time is to vote, give single stars, to nearly EVERY thread in the Free Parking forum, the asinine behavior encroaches on the absurd. I'm not certain what this passive/aggressive approach is meant communicate, but is there any way we can simply turn that function off for that forum? Every single thread having a single star emblazoned on it, is well, kind of annoying, but also makes the tool useless due to it's overuse.

Agreed.

It's a function that appears to be overused by a few for reasons unknown and underused by the majority. I find it annoying because there are many threads that remain on point, within the intended function of the forum, that are being rated with single stars.

I feel the ratings function should be eliminated. I know I could just ignore it, but that argument works both ways. So could those who are issuing the single star ratings.

If it stays there should at least be some change made, such as ratings given would no longer be anonymous.

Thank you to the owners and moderators of GJ for the countless hours you pour into the site, that we in turn get to use for free. Amazing.

Who cares? Star ratings are pretty useless anyway. Reply count will tell much more about the thread anyway.

Not really - to be of much use, the reply count has to be read in conjunction with the age of the thread - whereas the value of thread rating is independant of the age of the thread.

If you are so busy that you need to have a thread rating to tell you what threads are worth reading, you probably shouldn't be on an internet forum anyway.

I'm afraid your logic escapes me there - but nevermind - to resolve this we would need to know the thinking behind the design and incorporation of the rating system in the first place.

And I suspect that neither of us would have the time, or the inclination, to follow that up .... :)

Well this thread DID make me aware of the changes to forum . . . . never even noticed the "Rating Stars" until now. WHEN did that happen ??

I do like the Thread Tools and Search Thread functions right there handy.

The rating stars have always been there, you just weren't paying attention.

When we switch to the "new" format, now that is going to be a game changer. Not sure if it is going to be good or bad, but I know it will disrupt some people more than others. :willy_nil

I believe my thread ........

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=322333

........ may have successfully identified the culprit, although to be fair to the suspect, he has denied it. However I'm still left wondering three things ....

1) - Does admin. have access to the rating record of individual members, in the same way that they have access to PM records?
2) - Can individual members have their rating ability restricted if they are identified to be abusing the system?
3) - Is it possible to incorporate this useful little tool in the proposed new forum software, without leaving it open to abuse?

Many thanks guys ....

^ Won't matter when -

When Ryan decides to make the change to the same format as the HAMB that will all go.

What this probably means is that we are gonna have to get off of Vbulletin soon and go to Xenforo like we have done on jalopyjournal.com. It's a **** ton of work and will initially piss plenty of you off, but once you get used to it, it is so much better than VB.

Yes LB, I understand that from the previous links you kindly provided, but I see no reference as to whether or not the new software can have a rating facility - and as so many people find it of some use - my question #3 above stands .... :)

On the HAMB it is called a trophy point and I am pretty sure Ryan disabled it as being a hassle so more than likely once Ryan says we go to the new format the rating will go.

I just checked three random posters over there and they have accumulated 3, 43 and 83 trophies respectively - Ryan himself has 113 - so it seems to be working like this .....

Looks like a better system than the rating one we have here - immune from vandalism ....
