Hey guys. We bought a new tv for our bedroom so the old 27" tube TV is going to the garage. I want to build a shelf of some sort that sits fairly high on the wall. I was wondering if anybody had a cool design they used?
Why not just buy a wall mount? Probably not the answer you're looking for. ... but they do save time and space. . Plus such a narrow shelf would have to be pretty stout.
Just re-read the the first post and totally misinterpreted it. I thought you got rid of the tube. I agree with Luke get a cantilever mount for the wall or a ceiling mount. Could also build a shelf in the corner 2x4 pieces to mount a plywood shelf... Not mine but you get the idea.
I welded some 1 1/2" angle iron into a rectangle then dropped in a piece of 3/4" plywood for a shelf. I lagged it to the wall and put on angle at each end as support braces. It held my old fashioned 27" TV until a couple of years ago when I got a 46" flat screen which sits on the same shelf with a chain attached to the mounts and the wall to keep it from falling off the shelf.
That's why I just bought a 32" flat screen for my garage. PO musta had one out there too cause he left the old wall mount installed. Just slapped my new one on the mount. Good to go.

X2 - threw away every tube type here, including the 35". Besides, popping for even a cheap flat screen gives you access to all kinds of things the old tube can't/won't do - HDMI ports, USB, etc.
Honestly, I'd probably get rid of the tube and get a small flat screen for the garage if you want one there. The same sized 27" flat screen (a no name brand) will probably cost you less than $150 and look a lot better. With the holiday sales, I'm sure you can get one even a lot less than that.
I'll buck the current trend and say keep the tube, as long as it works fine, no need to just toss it. It's a garage, it will be fine. Something like NUTTSGT posted above should work in about any location, corner would be best, but even if you can only tie in to one wall, the threaded rod hangers to joists will give you plenty of strength.
