So my SIL lives in a condo with metal studs and wants me to attach a wall mount for her TV. What do you all like for mounting hardware?

1/4" toggle bolts are rated at 60lbs in 1/2" drywall. That's 240lbs if you use 4 of them.
They will hold a tv just fine.

Never drop wall anchors, McMaster as well as most box stores have them in 1/4-20. If you want them in 5/16-18 so the 1/4" bolts aren't so sloppy in the mount's holes, go to Grainger for that size..

I used the plywood trick to mount a 70" flat screen to a wall built with 20-25 ga steel framing and 1/2" drywall. We did a TI on the office and built a new wall with thicker steel framing, plywood, and drywall over that so the TV would be easy to mount. The business owner decided to put the TV on the existing wall. Those hilti anchors work well. I used a combo of drywall screws counter sunk into the plywood and the hilti anchors. I patched the screw holes with drywall mud and painted the plywood to match the wall. The plywood was cut smaller than the TV, so it isn't as noticeable. I did the same for a 55" TV in that guy's office a few months before the 70", and they worked quite well. The 70" was one of the first available in that size and was very expensive, there was no way I was going to take a chance of it falling down.

Many TV mounts are made to mount on 16" center studs.
Just use appropriately larger mounting screws and you'll be fine.
I've done many Ergotron wallmount installations and if you use the proper screws that come with it, it's very solid.
As others have mentioned, if the mounting locations are not ideal, then a piece of plywood properly fastened to the studs will work just fine.
I've also used the toggle bolt anchors, they're pretty effective when you use a good number of them, properly spaced of course.
Whether using a backer board or just the TV mount, I do always prefer mounting to studs whenever possible. Metal or not, they provide the best possible support.

Just mounted a 50" on metal studs with a full motion mount. Used four 1/4" snap toggles, two on each stud that are 16" centers. No wall flex with the mount/tv fully extended which is 18". Tv weighed around 30lbs and mount was probably 20lbs
