Picked these up off CL today for $45 each. Man, I wish I knew the story / where they came out of a little more defined than "PA." The seller grabbed them at auction. Pressteel???

With those welds and apparent metal thickness, they must be pretty heavy. What were the dimensions again?

Your best bet would be to study the different folding techniques used in their construction and then try to find similarly built boxes with a name on them. Most of the different makers used build styles specific to them.

They're "24 wide and 19" high at the top of the "hip." The draw pulls look an aweful lot like my old Pressteel Plomb box but the corners are different when you look at the folds as suggested.

Edit: Oh yeah, and they're friggin heavy!

Twerts: nice find. just asking if you might have an idea how many top and carry tool boxes you might own? you seem to have great taste even having time to help Beatcad find a cool box this week too.

did the guy keep all the tools or did you do another deal for those?

I kinda wonder if maybe those were some kind of apprenticeship project for metal-fab guys way back? Have to stamp the handles, braze them on, fold the steel, weld everything..... Then at the end you choose your colour and get your initials on it?

Not a bad thought. But, they came from a family estate auction and I'd like to think they were father / son boxes (same last initial in stencils)

Thanks for the picture that is the first one I have seen in green. The only other one I seen was red.

I take it that setup was built by Waterloo? If so, I have a very similar top, and the same bottom, just in red and branded as Dayton Electric. It's straight enough, and I use it daily at work.

Yup, it's Waterloo. There's been a Dayton stack here on CL forever, at a good price too but it's out on the peninsula and an absolute pain in the **** to get to so I haven't bit.......yet

Sorry to potentially derail this thread Twertsy, but what do you know about the Dayton branded boxes? What little info I've found was here on GJ, and I understand that they were sold through Grainger in the late 70s into the 80s, but mine is the only one I've ever seen in the flesh..
