Two air handlers in same room controlled by one remote

I have a new grow room that has one single zone mini split with one air handler and one duel zone mini split with one air handler in the same room. The other air handler for the dual zone unit is in the next room.

When I use the remote in the grow room (two air handlers) it controls both air handlers at the same time. I'd like to turn off one unit to be used as "backup" and use the other unit only. Any ideas on how to control each air handler separately? The units are built with wifi and thought about connecting each unit to a smart thermostat of some kind and use the wifi? The other thought is to take the wires off of the power of the "backup" air handler on the dual zone unit.

Any ideas?

Is it a RF remote ?

If it's IR, bringing the remote close to the unit you want to control and aiming it directly at it and away from the other unit should do the trick. You can also shield the second unit from the signal with your hand or something.

Yes it’s IR. The signal seems to bounce off the walls and reaches the other unit still. The room is 23’ x 15’

Read the manual. Some manufacturers will had a wire to clip, or a switch setting that will change the frequency of the signal from the remote so two units in the same room will work separately.

You try putting a piece of black electrical tape on the remote? No joke... it cuts down on the IR light tremendously.

Thank you for suggestions. I was able to find the app by the manufacturer and programmed it on my iPhone. Now I can control each unit independently without IR issues. The manual nor their tech team mentioned anything about their app, lol.
