Hello all,

Wife and I are moving and we are trying to find a house with either 3 car garage or 2 car with a shop. seems impossible with my wife's taste. anyways... we both found a house we really like, but it only has a 2 car garage. not a big deal, I guess.

I know that my shop gets messy with the welding and fabrication... so, i'm wondering if anyone knows of a divider that I can put up that is removable(like a big shower curtian or something) so the whole garage doesn't get dusty and dirty, just the side that i fabricate on.

I searched, but didn't see anything related.

any info would be appreciated.

A workshop i visited had a really rough area for doing all its resin and glass work on monocoque bodies they were building.

It looked terrible, until i saw the composite engineer pulling a rope/chain thing. The whole front of this area had a pulley system along the top. mounted under the upper beam was huge sheets of heavy plastic on rolls. As he pulled the rope, the rolls rolled down to the floor effectively sealing the area off from the rest of the workshop. A quick tug or two on the rope the other way had it back up and out of the way.

There were seperate extractor fans for that part of the workshop too, ensuring everything in the air was removed and not allowed to settle across the rest of the workshop.

Build your own? You could make a 2x2 or 2x4 frame that's fit perfectly, then stretch either 6 mil plastic or a weld-proof photo-translucent material across it. Could even add a door.

i've used the free standing welding walls. they are great for stopping direct weld spatter and grinding sparks. but they don't do much to stop the grinding dust from going everywhere.

i think a curtain hung from a rod right at the ceiling is really the only way to contain grinding dust.

the curtain walls in 'redlinetoys' link are exactly what i want to use in my garage. mcmaster carr sells similar things and actually posts their prices.

I just did the specs for s Goffs wall. Really nice stuff. I know more than one body shop that has them.

I have been looking for the same thing but have not found one I liked. I did buy a air filtration unit that helped a lot. It took most of the dust and smoke out of the air and greatly reduced the amount of dust that settles on everything. Might be of interest.

How often do you have to change out those filters? That might get pricey real quick. I do like the idea tho.

The main filter I have never had to change, is easy to clean. The prefilter I blow out once and then replace with a cheaper 3 for $7 filter from lowes. I work in my garage almost daily and replace the filter about once a week. I probably don't need to but I figure for a couple of bucks why not. The filters jet sell do work the best but I will not pay the $20 cost. Also the main reason for changing is because of wood dust. If you don't work on wood a lot I would think it would last a long time. You can get cheaper models but my wife bought it for me for my birthday. She worries about all the **** I breath in out there.

the dust settling on everything is what I worried about most. thanks for that link.

only big projects keep me out in the shop daily for a couple of hours after work(like building a cage for the rhino). from what you say Billcole, sounds like changing it once a month would be fine for me. I also only work with metal now.

figured i would update this thread and submit a pic request.

we decided to build... and we're going with a three car garage, third section(most outer garage) being my shop. it's going to be divided by a permanent wall, with one door for access. the third section garage itself will have two garage doors for pass thru and a door and window on the exterior wall.

the builder figured in the size of this third section as 22deep X 12wide. but, b/c my wife is getting everything she wants on the inside... i get to expand that size a bit(and add some goodies when building/finished)... going to 25deep X 15wide.

my request: does anyone have a shop that size??? i'm visual...

I went to my son's school. They had a divider wall in the gym that was so cool. It rolled up electrically. Went the length of the gym, from ceiling to floor. Go to your local school and ask to look in the gym to get some ideas.
