Two Huge Vise Finds This Weekend =)

Picked up these beauties this Saturday hitting the yard sales, both on the same day about 5 miles apart.

The dark one is a Reed No. 933 (I can't find any info on it, please fill me in if you know anything). The red one I can faintly make out Parker, but have no idea the model. My scale said the Parker weighs right about 160lbs. It has two locks for the swivel. Both work great minus the Reed having a little weird vibration while screwing it shut.

I paid $40 for the red Parker and only had $39 left, which the guy accepted for the Reed. :pimpflash

Wow. Just Wow. Great Scores! the Parker, is it 6" or 7?

Seems to be missing the "Parker" collar that retains the screw, but still...

Where do you guys all find these cheap vises! I was lucky enough to get one of the Yost 204 from the Hot Deals thread a while back, but it's nothing like finding a nice old one.... You ****!

Reed has to be an earlier model combination before the 1C-4C models came out. You can tell too by the handle and the dynamic jaw style.

The Parker is a very late model Union Tool manufacture. You can tell by the jaw inserts being just the rectangular ones and not the arched over-the top style of older Parkers'. Also the front collar is just the steel plate style and not the more intricate cast one. I think someone else posted a similar style, it was like a 974G (what happened to C thru F I do not know). But yeah, that thing looks like a 6" or so...

For those prices, YOU ****! I want that Parker!

It's a 6". Looking at the vise database http://dayid.org/mediawiki/index.php/Charles_Parker_Vise The only vise that has the same "label" style as mine is the very last one on the list. The indented box is just like mine. Only my Parker is ~160lbs and 25" long. With the writing in the vise so hard to read, I'm not sure how to get much more info out of it - maybe the 'ol pencil and paper shade trick. lol

Outlawmws - What is the "parker collar"? Have a pic you can post?

Below is a picture of someone else's vise. The collar is the one with the word PARKER on it. It is missing the retaining bolt. It is cast iron.

Yours is the style once Union Mfg took over... Here's a couple pics of mine... But I think yours is even a later model because of the jaws...

EDGAR - Thanks for the pic bro, but I think the collar style on mine is just like the one in the pics EOC Jason posted, which mine still has.

Greatwhitewing - At least you've been able to see how it's done ;) I seen your thread the other day - nice deal too!

EOC Jason - Thanks for sharing the pics bro, any idea when yours was made? Or the approximate year mine may have been made? Is there any markings or anything I could find that would point me towards the date it was made? How did the quality of Parker vises change (or not change) when Union Mfg took over?

The guy I got the Reed from was in his 80's and said he worked at the Bremerton Ship Yard for half his life - and that's where he got the Reed from. Cool little piece of history to go with it.

I *believe* Parker sold the rights and all their excess inventory to Union Tools some time in the 50's, and they continued to make the vises until some time in the 60's. Union Tools was also a very old company (100+ years). I would say they kept up the quality till the end, but you can see how they simplified the design over time to help reduce costs. Like instead of fancy curved bosses they became straight lines, and eventually were removed and just extended the main body. Also the nice fancy front collar that was cast became a piece of stamped steel. Finally the curved jaws of the older style (like mine) became the common rectangular shape like every other vise out there.

Cool deal, I appreciate the info! Sounds like mine is from the 60's. I wish it was older and had more character of the earlier models, but still happy to have a 160lb vise =)

How wide are the jaws on the two?

I'm going to guess and give you "ebay prices"....

Reed ~$150? It's really a shot in the dark since I've never seen one that exact model.

Parker ~$400? Guessing it's a 6"...

I just realized I never shared my after pic of the Parker. It's been cleaned up thoroughly, an issue with one of the keeper pins for the female screw part inside the static jaw has been fixed, everything has been lubed up and repainted.
