They are there to keep the two sides of the lift synchronized. Most lifts have cylinders on both sides, but the hydraulics may not flow evenly, since the power supply is closest to one cylinder and the other is much further away, line losses, etc MAY cause unevenness in the two sides of the lift, so the cables keep them together.

What is the make/model of the lift you are referring to? I have lifts from four different manufactures in my shops at work and they are all slightly different.

You may be able to find an installation or service manual on the manufactures website.
