Has anyone tried building their own two wheel dolly? I've been thinking about building one out of some scraps.

While you can do it, it's almost never worth the time of materials and effort to do so versus just buying one on sale for $20-30.

I have a Harbor Freight model that I updated with better tires. The ones that come with them go flat in a heart beat. Never ready when you are. If you build one invest in good tires. I agree with Vegaman Dan. You can't build one as cheap as they are. But building your own out of scrap as a skill building project seems like a reasonable thing to do.

I have to agree, cost more to build than you can buy one. Hey Bib, what is there about a tire that makes it go flat, I mean it is just a piece of rubber. That being said i picked up 2 tires for my dolly from Harbor Freight and they don't hold air! I put them in water and could see one of them was leaking through the center of the rim, not where the tires seals against it. Tire is probably ok, must be the rims that ****.

My folks have a what looks like a homemade hand truck. I'll be at there cabin soon and will try and snap a picture. Came with the cabin.

As for tires you could slime them or go to Wal-Mart and liquid corn starch them. Works great! easy clean up if need be. Downside is you pretty much have to go to Wal-Mart I couldn't find it anywhere else.

Interesting, I think mine leak through the rim. It is a 2 pc. rim spot welded together. I think I will try this if for no other reason just to see if it works. Thanks for the idea.

I'm sure you could, but why? i've got a couple home made dolly's i picked up over the years and they are all waaaay too heavy, or not very ergonomic. best bet is to either buy a new one with solid tires, or find a good used one and put better wheels/tires on it.

maybe follow a coke truck around till the driver leaves his dolly unattended..: ) seriously though, the dolly's the beverage drivers use are pretty nice and made of aluminum. try and find one of those if you can...

I made my own two wheel welding tank dolly. I wanted something compact and had a bunch of scrap steel.

It's OK, in hindsight it would have been easier to modify a "real" one. However, I got a lot of welding experience making my own.

Thanks for all the responses, I was testing the waters and got the responses I expected "WHY". I think I'll build a T-post builder instead!
