Beautiful work! But, what's it for? Displaying antique surgical tools, storing gold-plated sockets? If I had anything that nice I'd treat it like a museum piece!

It's a machinists chest, typically used to store measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers etc and other small tools a machinist would need that also need protecting well. I'm guessing it probably didn't look that nice when new!

I really need to get off my **** and build one of those. I've been looking at them for years, but never could justify the price. I was looking at a cheap HF Kennedy knock offs, I figure take that $150 bucks and buy some wood and hardware. Any chance we could "squeeze" TXinkman into giving us a dimension drawing??? Keith

Been wanting one for a loooong time -- scooped up a woodworker mag a few months ago that did a whole write up on building one but the rough totals were about 500 buxs!!! figured i could do it for a lot less -- or find a yardsale or CL one

That work that TXinkman is gorgeous. I have a thing for old machinist chests too, luckily I got married before I could start "collecting" them off EBay and CL like I did Sun test equipment.

I still have my great grandfathers old gerstner though. Actually applied to work at Gerstner a couple of times. No luck though. Boy would that have been a learning experience!

You are correct. Unfortunately neither link is directly to the article. Even though they're published by the same company, the websites are set up differently. Shopnotes often offers downloadable extras like the cut diagram, woodsmith, not so much. Both are quality publications if you're into woodwork.

I seldom respond to any comments about my boxes, but your comment in particular intriques me. I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say, "It's clearly not been restored."

You want to elaborate on that?
