Type of puller?

So, picked up a box of vintage tools. Very old Snap On, Mac, Proto, K-D, and other stuff for 20 bucks. Big box. Anyhow, this was in it and while I realize it is some type of captive puller, I have no idea WHAT it is for pulling.

Please chime in if you know what this was intended to be used for or with.

Thanks.

You can't see the pics, because I can. Why would they be visible to me but not you?

Is there some kind of block on imgur hosted images here? My linked imgur hosted pics work fine on TH and other forums. Very unusual but I'll see what I can do to get another set of images that you can see.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

Funny, because I've been working professionally as an automotive technician, on and off, for about 25 years since graduating from Wyoming Tech in 1993, and I've never seen or used one of those tools before or even heard of it.

I guess it's likely because the field has mostly moved to replacement rather than repair, especially for certain parts like CV shafts. Usually just as cheap, or even less expensive, these days, to simply replace the shaft than to bother with an individual joint.

Anyhow, I think it's a good find anyhow considering everything else I got in that box for twenty bucks including a double handful of Snap On and Mac specialty sockets and extensions. Obviously somebody probably passed and somebody didn't know what they had. Thanks again.

Those were for the first generation GM CV joints. They had boots that had to be pulled/pressed on to service the joints. I have one, need another... Those joints had to be serviced several times in 100,000 miles as the boots were not nearly as durable as those now and nobody made rebuilts.

Yes, makes sense.

I think this will get adapted and repurposed as a universal type puller for various things. In 26 years of doing this professionally I've never had to have one to do any CV boot, joint or shaft, and I don't expect I'll need one in the near future either. So, multipurpose tool.

That is an alternator hook used for applying tension to the belt (old style V belts) prior to tightening the pivot bolts.

Thank you Wild Bill. I had a feeling it was something like that because of the half inch drive variable position ratchet hole, which is also found on modern serpentine belt tensioner tool extensions, but I was not sure of it by any means. Appreciate the insight.
