U.K. Vice (Vise) guys! - Sad Record No24

Here's a strange and sad tale, but I'm hoping to find a resolution from among the U.K guys here on GJ.

About a year ago our shop here in southern California was burglarized. They got lots of tools, most of which have now been replaced. But the truly strange thing about it is that for some unknowable reason, they stole the mainscrew out of our old Record Quick-Release No24 Vise. It's not like it was outside the vise and lying on the bench...They had to disassemble the vise in order to do it!

I can't imagine what was going through that monkey's mind but it has become a somewhat of a quest of sorts to put this tool back to rights.

I've already been in touch with Irwin U.K. - Who said "All of the replacement parts that we had have long gone and none of the replacement parts in our current product range are suitable for use with a No.24 vice."

So I'm turning to GJ in hopes someone somewhere has an old No 24 with a broken jaw lying under the bench that would be willing to part with the mainscrew and half-nut.

Thanks for any help and/or ideas!

That is strange. Do you know what size and type thread it takes? I have a handle/spindle assembly sitting here from an old Yost. It is 7/8" diameter with a single Acme thread and 7 threads per inch. If you think this would work for you then it's yours if you just pay for shipping. Let me know if it could work and we'll go from there. Good luck.

I think it was mentioned the other day that the 24 would be just over 1" diameter Balane. The 23 is a gnat's shy of 1". Plus, the QR leadscrews use a buttress thread.

OK, then this one definitely won't work. Thought it worth a long shot. Here's a photo of it anyway. If anybody can use it then get in touch with me before my metal guy picks up on Tuesday.

Thanks for the response and the offer Balane. I'm not certain of either the diameter or thread profile since I've never actually seen the screw and I haven't found anytone with data/specs on it.

Fretters' info above is the most I've found.... (Thanks, Fretters! :^)

That is one of the strangest thefts I've heard of. Almost sounds like the thief was pissed he couldn't take the whole vise, so he stole part of it to render it useless. Odd as hell.

Calling Rev Scott!!!

Oh ****---Rev Scott doesn't have a lathe....

Well, he could probably whittle a suitable substitute...

Does anyone have a similar model that some photos and measurements could be taken from???

Will keep an eye out for a busted No24 over here, I doubt shipping would be too excessive for just the screw and handle, even getting one made is difficult with out having another to copy.

They stole both the mainscrew AND NUT? Indeed they would have to flip it over and remove bracket to get the nut out....

Since you need both, perhaps you could convert it to a conventional non-quick release version using readily available parts? In all fairness, a new original mainscrew and nut would likely cost more than the vise is worth. Hopefully something will come along soon to fill the void.
BTW, while I have access to the correct screw (I have a No. 24) and a lathe to produce it, I could not duplicate the nut

I would consider retrofitting it to hydraulic or electric linear actuator.

OR, just make something from scratch that would work. Since you need both the male and female threads, no need to custom match an existing thread profile.

OP . . . any "obscure friends" of yours that have been to your garage . .
. . . AND . . they also have a Record vise ??

Bet they "needed" your parts !! ;)

That looks like an INSIDE JOB !! :eyecrazy:

Good luck getting the "vice" up and running again.

If you undo the two screws holding the quick release lever plate you can remove the main screw and qr lever just by pulling it out the front. Then you can just slide the dynamic jaw straight out and (if it's like the other Record QR vices) just reach into the static jaw cavity and pick the half nut out. So stealing the half nut is little more work than stealing the main screw.

Thank you everyone for your great input and suggestions!

Dutchgray - That would be the ultimate resolution to this issue. Thanks for keeping an eye out!

Zkling - Yeah, if it comes to "just making it work" those are good, solid alternatives.... But man, I sure hate to give up on such a great tool if there's any way left to restore it to original.

CNGsaves - yup, we're thinking along the same lines.

CwazyWabbit - Let me know if you break a jaw on one of your 24s !!
