I'm going to be checking this grinder out, and would like to know what you guys think pricewise.

It's a model 500 5hp 3 phase pedestal grinder. I'm working on getting the serial number so I can figure out manufacture date, as I'm more interested in vintage equipment. Although for the right price it doesn't really matter as long as it's American made (which it is).

I would hook up a vfd, and restore it first.

Thanks,

Billy M.

I remember a massive 12" grinder for sale in my area last winter. I saw it in person and even took a picture of it but don't recall much detail. I'm pretty sure the asking price was $550. Who knows what it actually sold for or what was traded for it.

Would be really cool to own but I just couldn't justify that kind of money for a grinder I wouldn't use to its full capability.

US Electrical Tool builds the best grinders, I think. They make Baldors seem like cheap toys by comparison.

Reality check. Are you prepared for the cost of the wheels? A large VFD to run that is not going to be cheap in the first place. Is it neat, yea sure, but practical for most people? Not really.

You're not just a little biased are you?:D Did you ever get yours finished? I would love to see pictures.

Zkling, yeah it is really, really neat. As little as I would use it though, those wheels, if they are in good shape, would never need to be replaced.

I didn't think about the higher HP vfd being more expensive. Of course ~$200 isn't too bad, but I have absolutely no idea what the difference between a ~$200 & ~$1500 (prices on eBay) vfd would be.

It is in no way practical for me. I have a 1hp 10" Dayton that I love and it is more than enough for me.

I would love to have it; however, the wife pretty much nixed it. I'm fine with that since I found a complete Sibley drill recently (you know the kind that can survive in the desert for a long time). It has powerfeed, back gears, the whole shebang. Anyway I'm working on an offer and logistics for picking it up, and I would much rather have it (and it is single phase).

Yeah I know, who lets their wife run the tool budget? :lol_hitti. We'll if I didn't, I might have a 5hp grinder I don't need:lol:

So anyone interested look for pedestal grinder in the Austin area CL.

Thanks for your input.

Love is truly operating a big **** grinder in your shop that you've re ferbed.
Ignore the naysayers life is to short.

Besides you have a big grinder nut just next door so you 2 can have a good old fashion grind off!!

But of course the us electrical is second place to the queen city!!

I have a 3hp, 14" model. I would pick that one up if you can get it for a good price. I would agree with APMech, best grinder out there. The wheels are expensive, but it is nice to use, and I have cleaned up a ton of tools on the wire wheel. I was shocked once I restored mine and called US electrical (still in biz making these) to see what they cost. I think mine was like $6300 for a new one.

Looks like its got the face shields and both guards, just missing the cup.

Here is mine, covered in **** before I moved. I have all the parts, I just removed the guard when using the wire wheel.
