Yesterday I broke the handle off on my slide hammer type bead breaker.
The handle part is just a turned down, knurled end on the main plunger.

Some weird, really grainy type steel, and when grinding it up to weld, I just had a gut feeling it was going to be troublesome to weld.
I remembered having some of this rod is bought on a neighbors farm sale and decided to give it a try.

Set welder at about 110amps DC and proceeded to lay down the most beautiful bead I've ever made. I'm no expert, but this looked like a TIG weld, and the metal has a stainless steel sort of look.

Anyone ever use this stuff? I see it's about $2/stick at Menards.

I wailed the hell out of that bead breaker, changing 4 skid loader tires, and it held just fine.

IIRC I think it is a E12018 class rod. Their rods aren't bad, but pretty expensive. They carter to the weekend guy with low technical terms and low quantity available in hardware type stores. In a pinch I've used their 55% Ni rods before.
