Looks like the US General tool boxes are on sale. I haven't seen them on sale recently.
Unless I'm wrong and these are the normal prices and they are just having a pretend sale.
I'm sure HF would never have a pretend sale...…

I am not sure if the prices are anything special, the 44" was $399 on particular days before. I even think the 72" was lower before.

Not quite, the older 44x18 were that low. The 22"deep had been 449 for a bit.

I already have the older 44 x 18 box and it's wayyyyyyy too small. The 44" doesn't look that great but I don't recall seeing the 72" for that cheap.

I've been tracking the prices on the US General boxes for about 60 days now. These prices are pretty decent, especially considering there have been some increases in the everyday prices.

The frugal and lazy parts of me wants to ignore this sale and keep the money in my sock drawer and just keep using my old overstuffed Kennedy and Homak boxes. The evil side of me wants something new and shiny with room to spare. Then I remember it's still August in Phoenix and just loading these up and bringing them home is going to be a heavy, sweaty job, let alone transferring 50 years worth of tools over.

Now if they made that 72 incher a 78 incher so I could fit 3 of the 26" top boxes with all those nice shallow drawers on 'em right on top, I'd probably be down there right now.

As it is, I think I'll just have a beer and think on it a bit more...

Add a side hangon drawer unit and level out top with thick rubber stall mat or ply bonded under standard mats and you fit 3 26" .

650 for the 56" is fair enough price .

I was actually only considering the 72" with a longshot of 2 44" boxes but I could actually fit the 56" and keep my cart. :headscrat

I put a poll in Free Parking if anyone wants to weigh in.

Thanks! I eventually figured that out after my second beer.

It does make me wonder why Harbor Freight doesn't adopt a truly modular sizing. Drop the 26" and make it a 30", make the 56" a 60" and make the 72" a 90". Also eliminate the 44"model altogether because you could hang the existing 15" drawers on one side a 30" and presto, there's your 45". Hang a 15" side drawer on the 60" and there's your 75" badboy. Or two of the 15" drawers on either side of the 90" box and you've got a 120" long tool truck killer.

The same versatility would work with top boxes and they wouldn't have to make but 2 sizes, a 30" and a 60". Add a 15" side drawer top box extension and boom.

The 44" was $399 for Black Friday (2018)

Also, the Yukon 46 in. Mobile Storage Cabinet with Wood Top was $199 at that same time (2 doors & 1 drawer #64012/64023).

I just went tonight and got the US General 56" in Red. I took my wife and she says isn't this bigger one better? But I don't have the room for it. She's not the person to take tool shopping, two people with no restraint is bad!! going to be in in a couple of weeks, didn't haave the red in stock. Plus I need to make room for it.

Should of listened to her and picked up anything else useful in making the garage bigger :)
56" is fairly decent sized box, not so big hard transport or roll loaded yet not too small, turns easily into a 3bay withside hangon drawer unit .
For 650bucks it not a bad buy, drawer layout of too many deep drawers and plastic finger pull latch biggest downfall for some use scenarios.
if made effort or got lucky and got better factory model which has longer extending slides, slide detents as well as plastic latch , riveted locking catch on back of drawers and few panel fold differences you done even better .

You won't be disappointed. I've had my 56" for years now (got it on sale for 700) and couldn't be happier. As was mentioned above, the drawer layout is not perfect but show me a box that has a perfect drawer layout at this price :)

Good luck with it!

I like the white cart but does anyone know if there will be tool boxes in white? Thank you

I emailed HF and asked that question. Their only reply was to check the website periodically for new products. So my guess is probably they will. No idea when though.

The plastic drawer latches remove very easily.

yeh normally just takes few days light use lol .
If you buy factory version with detent slides then ideal removing them, if no detents it not ideal have no latching besides the main lock bar .
is a piss poor cheap effort
series 2 should of had full pull latch same as the masterforce box design or decent adjustable detent slides .

I would respectfully disagree... HF boxes are usually less expensive and IMO better than the Craftsman, Husky, Kobalt, and all the other local store-stocked boxes. If you're going to call anything "piss poor," I would start with those other boxes first.

I have been watching these.

The March 2019 parking lot sale was the last time the 44 went down to $399, it was right before the effects of the tariffs appeared to take hold. As shown, the in store flyer says $429 at this weekend's parking lot sale, the best I have seen since March.

Anyone who is considering these boxes should read this thread:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=408543&highlight=harbor+freight

There are different part numbers for these boxes. It is because they are different. The thread started on 56 black boxes, but there is info on 44 and other colors. You should read this thread before buying as there are a number of subtle but important differences in the boxes depending on part number.

It is an interesting read.

Good luck to all finding the right box.

How often are you realistically going to be moving a 56" tool box around a shop or garage? Fill it with tools and it's a beast to push. If you use your box a lot those latches become a PITA quickly.

Can you give me some bullet points on what to look for to get the better box. It's frustrating these people pointing out the differences but don't say what is better or worse.

Greetings,

I have been searching but have not come across anything definitive. Does the orange 44” box have two part numbers?

Thanks,
Griff

If you remove the latch the drawers do not all stay even fully closed sat stationary .
When I used a 56" it was moved many times daily even on a forklift to other out buildings .
Would of been so simple upgrade that latch along with other series2 improvements .
If you make effort buy the factory version which got detents in the slides as well then you doing better .

The latch is a piss poor cheap effort, always was and always will be, rest of box fairly good at price point but the masterforce for example is a big design and quality jump .

I believe all of mine have detents when in closed position but it may just be my newer side boxes. The tool cart has the latches which annoy me but I deal with it in case I have to move it around some day. I would say your usage is atypical but understand you needing the latches. Nothing more frustrating than having the drawers fly out and spill contents in the middle of a project.

Griff,

The HF website shows one sku for orange and green, 2 for red, and 3 for black or blue.

Bruce
Something I wasn't aware of before I bought my 44" blue chest, if you do a pre-sale (buy in store if they have no stock) there is a specific SKU that is used. If they have stock, the SKU maybe different. Assume similar for chests with several SKUs.

Regarding latches.... Glad my 44 doesn't have them.
