Can't help you about the order of fixing the cracks, although I've used a pre-mixed product to fill some pits and cracks. I think it's made by Quikcrete, it's a quart (?) bottle with a squeeze tip. I spray a little water in the pit or crack and let it soak in a bit, then squeeze the goop in. It self-levels pretty well, so it requires two or more applications for deep flaws. And it shrinks a bit too, so two coats is pretty much necessary. It retains a bit of flexibility when dry, which is nice. I've sanded it smooth with no problems, although it eats sandpaper pretty fast.
Regarding the size of the flecks, I've been wondering if I could crunch up the flakes smaller. I'd prefer a finer, more granite-like fleck pattern than what I've seen so far. Like the way my mom used to make bread crumbs: throw a couple pieces of toast or stale bread in a ZipLoc and roll them with a rolling pin. I haven't actually handled any of these products yet, are the chips crunch-up-able?
