UFO's for a 35x30 with 14' walls

My new to me garage needs to be made functional so I can work in it, so I can work on it, and work on other projects around the house. It is 35x30 with 14 foot walls and open rafters. It has two 9x10 (I think) doors and one 9x12 (I think) door.

I was planning on putting up 6 UFOs, and two strip LED lights down the center to turn on when I don't need all the lights to come on, just running in to grab something.

What advice can the community offer to mitigate the doors blocking half the light when they are open?

6 UFOs - potentially a lot of light. My only "UFO" issue is that I wish I had a dimmer.

Best you can do is make sure they're out of range of the garage door when up, but I seriously doubt that's going to be an issue with that many of them.

I'm gonna say I'm gonna have the doors open a lot. I got a pretty decent sunset view, there is zero hvac in the garage so the temp outside is gonna be the temp inside.

I have 8 ufos in my 28x46. I have 12ft ceilings in the back that work up to a 14.5ft wall on the front due to the mono pitched roof. Talking with Hero they took my shop dimensions and gave me a lighting profile. It called for 8 lamps. I was originally going to cheap out and try using 6 but the light was not as good. Usable, but I knew I was not going to be happy. With 8 the lighting is very adequate. I have my shop broken up with 2 lighting circuits, 4 on each switch. Im not running a dimmer but it is possible with these lights. They are more expensive now, I think I paid $40-50 a lamp. I also got the diffusers to help break up the light, without you would get some LED blindness. These also help to cast the light outward vs downward for a little better coverage. Ive had these installed for 4 year or so, no issues whatsoever.

As for your issues with door blockage of the light I wouldn't worry about it too much. I would plan the lighting based on the doors being closed so you make sure you have good light overlap. I installed my door in a pocket style fashion so that I wouldn't lose overhead, so I don't have that issue. With the rafters being open you'll be able to experiment and hang the lights via temp hooks and extension cords to see what works best for your needs.

This is with all lights installed. Roughly 830pm at night. No shadow areas and plenty of light.

I just did 4 or 5 UFOs in a 20x60'. One of them is above the garage door when it is up, still tons of light.

UFO's come in a multitude of lumen packages, from 8000 to 50,000 and everything in between. You guys aren't helping each other when you just say "UFO's". You should either specify the wattage (if you're an old guy) or lumens, so that folks know what you're talking about. For instance, "I used 6 150w UFO's", or "I used 4 15,000 lumen UFO's." Just a friendly reminder.

I've seen a few garage doors with lightweight LED strip lights on them. Door is up, flip that switch and they're on. If you're worried about it put the lights that will be above the garage door on a separate switch so you can leave them off and turn the ones you have mounted on the door on. Get one of those coiled up cords and mount the stationary end in the middle of the door height wise and it'll all work out nicely when the door is open.

Or just use the ufo lights and don't work under the lights. I had 4 ufo lights in my 24x24 shop and there was tons of light when the door was open and blocking them completely.

Reached out to Hyperlite and they did a few layouts for Ufo 100w hero's for a 35x50x13.5' I think my plan is to do 9 lights which will give me 60-70FC in the center area's and 30-40's in the corner's. I had them do the same layout with the 150w lights and they did not recommend it some area's reached 120FC. They are fairly helpful with the layouts maybe hit them up it costs nothing to do it.

They were spot on with the recommendations for my set up. I’m glad I didn’t go larger then 100w as it would have been to bright, even with the diffusers added on. Some added value for Hyperlite. For those who are debating the diffusers the clear ones seem to work better for casting the light then the milky ones in my garage. The milky ones would still give you the LED glare more so then the clear.

I got 4 of them up. It's nice! I need to return one that is broken. I will put the other two up, if too bright (doubtful) I will hang two out in front of the garage. I have 4 of the three foot LED haning lamps I am going to put above the tool boxes and work benches that will go in eventually.
