...........in my transmission oil pan?

This is a 2004R that's slated to go into my "78 Corvette. This was supposedly a 50K mile "good working" transmission out of Grampa's car. A craigslist seller wouldn't lie, right?

Anyway, is that friction material I see in the pan? The fluid didn't look burned or discolored.

it could have only 50k on it out of grampas car that towed a 35 ft car hauler through the mountians with 2 dually pick ups on it while being held on the floor.


its been hot before are the pieces solid or piles of mush?
piles of mush would be friction material
hard could just be gasket from a previous repair baked to the pan
in my experience if its chunks of friction material there's some serious damage somewhere.

ax4n trans with chunks of clutch in the pan cost me right at $800 in parts alone because of a completely wasted drum that let a disc out. that $700 car got expencive quick
autos are easy enough to rebuild have a shop or buddy with the right compressor tools do the packs and do assembly yourself

Fluid looks burnt to me, should be a nice red color, not the brown color it is ... time to learn to rebuild

Yep, friction material. Plus a bit of gunk attached to the magnet, this means most likely one set of clutches tended to slip (most likely 2nd gear) between shifts too much. Localized heating of that one particular set causing the clutches to delaminate. but there was not enough sustained slippage to burn the fluid.
