Hi, I'm Matt and I live in Kent in the UK (bottom right hand corner)

I've followed the various threads on here over the last couple of years and found them hugely inspirational.

Here in the UK it is rare to have the huge plots of land that you guys in the US have so our garages tend to be on the small side.

Anyway here's my story ...

I've started this thread just as we've knocked down our small 2 bay garage and embark on building a 75' x 30' x 13' garage to house my collection of Land Rover Defenders.

The building will be a steel framed (all galvanised) construction that will be clad with insulated panels.

Here is what we started with. The building to the right is a 2 bay cart lodge that we've turned into an office to run our businesses from home.

This is the original building being demolished and the overhanging trees being pruned.

Although you can't really see, there is quite a slope on the site so the left hand end is being dug out.

The footings for each upright will be on a pad of concrete 1m x 1m x 600mm

Let me know if this is of any interest to you guys and I'll keep you up to date with developments.

Will do !

Actually, it's not a tractor, it's a 'trialer'

We have three Defenders with a fourth arriving on Monday, the trialer and a Supercharged Range Rover

Here's a couple of them whilst I go and take pictures of the others

And that is why I hate you!.

Wish I could have a defender and somewhere to tinker on it. Instead im stuck with my modified freelander in a multistory carpark haha.

Are you on the Defender2 forum?

WOW! They are awesome! And you have more? I have been an IH Scout since I was a kid. Very rarely have I seen a Defender. I would like to see one side by side with a Scout or older Bronco. Too cool! Thanks for posting.

Thanks for all the comments.

Yes, I'm on the Defender2 forum as a sponsor.

I'd love an old Bronco, I don't think I've ever seen one in the UK

More pictures once there's a bit more progress

Hi Defender outfitter, can I ask have you sourced the garage yet? I'm looking at buying a house in Devon that's got a perfect space for a nice if garage, but I'm not sure if I want to go metal or brick built. Can I ask what sort of money the metal system you are going to use is? Also if you have any more info?

Cheers Chris.

This should be interesting. Although I kind of liked how that old black garage disappeared into the shadows. I'm sure you'll new one will be much more functional.

Thanks guys.

The building is being supplied by Fowler & Gilbert.

It is all steel construction (that I have specified as galvanised) with insulated cladding to walls and roof.

Cost of the building inc VAT is £20k, ground work inc concrete approx. £14k, 5 insulated roller shutter doors 3m x 3m fitted £6k, electrics ?, oil fired hot air blower approx. £5k

Defenders all have 'FCX' on number plate - Google is your friend ....

Great thread - nice defenders (I own a Rangie Classic).....seriously jealous about the size of your plot because by UK standards it's massive.....

Look forward to the updates....

That's exactly what it is Ken, an obsession !

Slow going on the build at present, the concrete is being poured to support the uprights today, photos to follow later, then it's wait for the frame to be delivered

Dont know how i missed this the first time you posted. Truly a fantastic size building. Not Jealous - much!

So i assume the building sits on those pads you have done? Im surprised how shallow they are. You must have good ground conditions. I seem to have done a base you could build a multistory carpark off.

Good to see another steel building. Certainly makes sense on something this size.

The pad specification was supplied by the building manufacturer so I presume they know what they are talking about.

The ground is actually pretty hard clay but the manufacturer doesn't know that.

I double checked with the guys putting the building up and they told me that's the size pad they've always used and they've done a fair few installs over the years.

Wren built St Paul's Cathedral on clay. The building was subsiding before they finished it. I'd get those foundations checked by a chartered structural engineer. Could be costly to get wrong and easier to address now.

Welcome !!

Lovely Landies.

I would just go ahead and build, screw it all, if needs arise, then sue someone, it seems to be the modern way.

Jokes and seriousness aside. I am no engineer, but suspect the flex in the framework along with the size of the pads is all more than sufficient to deal with normal settlement.

I am up in Rochester over on the Hoo peninsula and would say that wind would worry me more than water etc.

Look forward to the rest of your build, and your thread staying alive.

Remember, we all love pictures, so post up some action from your trailing weekends etc.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've checked with the manufacturer, the installer and had a look online and I'm happy that the pads are the right size.

The remaining pads are being concreted tomorrow and the building is scheduled for delivery during the second week of August so more updates then.

Looks great, the biggest thing with a footing is that its below the frost line for your area.
You have some awesome Landys and that garage will be the coolest hangout once your finished!
