Ok so I have just bought a house with a detached single garage and driveway.

The plan is to turn it in to a workable space to restore my wife's 1971 VW Beetle (1302)

To start with it was a rodent/spider/snail paradise....

They have since been served eviction notice and the clean up has started.

If the images don't work I will edit this later.

Thanks for any help and or support on this.

Mike

Hey,

I'm also in the UK. Your garage is very similar to mine, except yours is in better shape lol. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Thanks guys.

So a couple more pic and a bit more info.

So the garage had Ivy and other plants growing all over the side and over the roof. It was also starting to grow in to the garage.

This has now been removed.

The concrete floor is ridged which would make working on a car a bit of a pain.

So far I have purchased some heavy duty self leveling floor compound, some white paint for the walls and some light grey concrete paint/sealer.

So as soon as I get some time (hopefully at the weekend) I will start with jet washing the floor. scrub the walls, fill any holes that the previous owner put in, and then start painting. hopefully will get started on the flooring too.

Oh and jet wash the driveway. You can see the difference in this pic here where I started to jet wash a small section.

So the garage currently looks like this.

The fridge/freezer will stay so I will need to work out storage/work space around it. Plus the car when we move it in.

I think I might have my work cut out for me.

Looks like a fun project. There are some terrific small garages on here. Lots of storage and layout ideas.

Cheers

From the surveys the house and garage were built at the same time - Circa 1980-82

(and the house probably hasn't been decorated since :wtf: )

Checked out the Electricity supply to the garage yesterday with a view to upgrading the lighting and number of sockets. Currently the light switches are in inconvenient places and the exterior light is on a plug in to one of only two sockets in the garage (the other being used by the fridge/freezer.

Think this should be up to the job. Just need to expand and adjust what is there.

I'm guessing that the wall to the left in the first picture is a neighbour's wall? I don't like the look of the crack in it. I'd get that repaired or at least discuss it with your neighbour!

Nice project.

I did a similar project on my single and it made a massive difference to the space- just splashing some paint on the walls works wonders.

I was thinking the same thing earlier!

Might have to approach them about that soon as!

Welcome Welcome Welcome !!

Good to have a clean (well after you clean it up) canvas.

I personally hate Ivy and any creeper type plants as they ate mostly drstructive and harbour allsorts. That said, my garage creeper thing ( which my wife owns) is harbouring a nest of finches this year and we had Blue **** in a box too.

Once you pressure clean everything, including the side walls you will be amazed at how good it turns out.

I suspect you are going to either extend the garage or build a carport out front too. This was what we built at my mate Martins place for his resto. Page 2 starts the pics.

Looking forward to the progress.

I did a 1963 Beetle about 23 years ago and also owned a 1959 Beetle a few years later. So looking forward to your resto too.

Thanks for the welcome.

Don't get too excited about the resto of the beetle.... it will just be pictures of rust!

so paint has started on the walls.

Flooring went down at the weekend.

Couple of air bubbles where we should have let the mixture settle before pouring it.

Anyway happy with the floor - it is so much better than before and so much less dust!

Now to paint the rest of the walls and the floor.

Trying to get some stuff done in the evenings but getting home later due to a training course this week.

More to follow.

Have you used self levelling compound before?

I tried it 30 years ago and I got in a bit of a mess with it. It did not seem to want to flow out and self level. I ended up trowelling it out so not touched it since. However, despite you bubbles it looks very good.

A roof like that should not leak. Look for damage on the outside or loose ridge tiles. Due to the sarking felt you may get a misleading idea of where the leak is from the inside.

There will have been water in the levelling compound and in the paint. Has that caused condensation on the inside of the roof?

never used leveling compound before and this stuff worked brilliantly. Easy to mix and pour. i did help it along a bit with a trowel but i have to say that was minimal work.

It set pretty quickly but then it was 26 degrees C on that day.

will check the roof this weekend.

Ok so a bit more work on the garage this weekend.

Finished painting the walls and the floor.

Here is the extent of the leak after yesterdays rains

Still trying to work out where it is coming in. - it was damp in four places but that was the worst of it. Also dripping down through the electricity supply.

Also I need to work out what to do with replacing the side door and securing it.

Had similar in my garage. Water is breaching the damp course. Check the outside for small cracks in the mortar. May need a coating on the outside.

So this evening was spent boarding the loft.... This has given me ideas to do the same with the garage to make the roof space more usable for storage.

Just wondered if anyone had done this and if there were any issues encountered?

I'm looking forward to getting my work bench in to the garage this weekend.... Hopefully a few other bits.

Got a small compressor working in there but it needs repairing. Hopefully more to come on that also.

Nice looking space. Amazing what a difference a coat of paint makes to everything.

Have you figured out where the water is getting in yet?

Not 100% as i think the water is running down the inside of the felt and appearing in a different location... so finding where it is actually coming from is a bit of a PITA.

Hopefully got someone coming to look at it this weekend.

Can you mark the inside of the roof with chalk lines and zero in on where it's getting in?
The upside of that is they can be rubbed off afterwards.

Looking good though.

I did this in a previous garage and the only issue I had was I forgot to make the access hole nice and big. Once I'd enlarged it a bit it was all good. Installed fluorescent lights between the joists so it was nice and light and it helped keep the warmth in too.

Bit more done over the weekend.

Got the work bench in..... Still got to work out if it is in the right place when we try and get the VW Beetle in.... Found that the compressor fits in the work bench which is awesome and saves some more space.

Then various jobs around the house and garage which turned the garage to sh*t.

So tidied up....
Still lots to do with working out where shelves and other bits will be going.

Also worked out that it is going to be pointless to keep washing the car when the pigeons sit on the TV ariel....

Played around with the layout in the garage this evening to try and work out the best setup.

Compressor hidden away in the work bench.

However with the beetle measuring a reported (according to the interwebs) 13ft 4.... things aren't quite going to fit.

Going to measure it for real tomorrow to confirm how much room i have to play with.... or not.

Will it fit if the workbench and freezer are on the back wall?

If the freezer and workbench are on the back wall then there is a gap of about 6inch to the side of the workbench..... I'm thinking about leaving the freezer where it is and putting the work bench at the back on the right and then the tool cab on the left against the back wall.

Hope that might work.

I measured up the beetle at 13ft 4 long. I never thought it was that big! Anyway if I remove the bumpers I can recover about 8 inches which should help.

This weekend will be some roof repair and hopefully start clearing some space in the garden for a shed.
