If those are card catalogs, I can tell you that most from the paper card era make lousy storage bins. The sides are cut down to make flipping the cards easier. It may look 3 x 4 or 5 on the outside, inside it's maybe 1x3~4. We have a few in storage - pass.

I have cabinets similar to those and was able mount them "double depth" by making a rail for the front ones to slide on. The main parts I used were uni-strut and shower door rollers.

Added the Plano boxes, bin organizers from the 99 Cents store and P-Touch labels on the drawers. Viola! Small parts organizers for VERY low cost.

i went throught this, this weekends, boxes and boxes of nuts and bolts that i have not used in twenty years. except for most automotive bolts, the oonly boly i use in any quanity are 3/8, 7/16. 1/2 9/16 and 3/4, no more than two inches long, most about inch long.

so i was thinking of tossing everything else if i need one, hardware store

just because i need a warehouse just to store the extra parts, jigs, bolts, bull **** , I have no garage left

I have a couple of the units like the OP linked. They're nice but I think you get limited on size of objects going in them, unless you step up to the units with the bigger drawers.


All said and done, some storage is better than no storage.

As **** as I can sometimes be, I can't imagine any homeowner DIY'er "needing" something like that. If you're in business, then yes I could see it. Otherwise its just a weird indulgence (as all of us on THIS particular site should be experts at recognizing! )

That's a great idea - maximizes space on the cheap!

those cabinets at the state of IL look good, but they were make for cards, with so many rows, I don't know how well they would work, but would like to see them in person, But not a bad price!!!!!

Have you had any problems with the boxes sagging? Are the boxes plastic or metal?

Couple of years ago I was lucky enough to find one of those one CL. Perfect condition. The guys wife wanted the space in the basement so he was clearing out his workshop. I absolutely love the thing. $100...and he was happy to get his wife off his back a bit.

That's awesome. How good/bad do the drawers slide with the weight of bolts in them?

They slide in/out well. Nothing real heavy in anynof them though. I use the shorter cabinet ( to the left, in the pic) for heavier stuff. Biggest issue is finding what I'm looking for. I have to find the time to label all of the drawers.

I have one but I'm just having a heck of a time adjusting the font size to fit properly inside the labeling area. Ive wasted a bunch of the label tape trying to figure it out. I know I that I must be overlooking something.

No problems with sagging. The cabinets are thin metal (about 22 guage) and the bins are plastic. I screwed a piece of 1" oak to the top of the front row cabinets to both attach the shower door rollers to and to stiffen up the top of the cabinets. They slide at least as well as similar hardware cabinets you see in retail stores ... and better than a lot of them.

I mostly search the *TOOLS* listings. In the search box at the top try *cabinets* Storage* bins* I haven't found anything good under any of the other list headings. But I search religiously every couple hours. I'm retired **or retarded, or maybe a little of both I don't know...* anyways it's a little easier for me...

I like the setup PCO6 has with the clear drawers. I'm not organized enough to label everything well and clear drawers mean I don't have to open up every drawer to find what I need.

Try to find an Addressograph cabinet. I have been slowly filling mine and I don't think I will run out of room. 6' tall, 4' wide' 2' deep. 133 drawers.
