I like the setup PCO6 has with the clear drawers. I'm not organized enough to label everything well and clear drawers mean I don't have to open up every drawer to find what I need.
Lhorn - It's funny that you would say that. I recently removed the sliding cabinets that I posted above (#10). I plan to reinstall them elsewhere. I am in the process of building a desk/computer station generally where the cabinets were.

I bought some Plano plastic storage boxes from Bass Pro to store small hardware. I put them in the metal cabinet above my desk. The cabinet will have doors on it. Each clear plastic box is numbered - 34 in all. I have a simple Excel spread sheet to identify what is in each box on file on my laptop. It makes for easy reference but the more I use the hardware boxes the easier it is to remember the boxes I most often need.

This system works well because I can take a box of hardware to the place I am working.

My not quite finished garage desk ...

my card files; pretty much all labelled up.
I have 3 units of 27 drawers on one wall, and another unit, next to the mill.

They are getting filled up real quick!

fredybender - Nice set up. I think card files offer the most storage for the space that they take up. I have 2 (16 drawers - 28" deep) and they hold a ton of stuff!

We had assortments of hardware / fittings lined up all around the shop. I just consolidated most of it to make more space in the shop. Stacked / bolted together 2 stacks of 3 of the 40-hole cabinets back to back and then will be adding 3 more on the end cap (waiting on them to arrive).

If anyone is interested and in the area a guy had 2 open hole cabinets like those in post#45 above probably 5' tall, 3'wide at Denios flea market here in Roseville,CA. He was asking $200.00ea. Both were red and clean. He also had a bunch of the 4 drawer pull-out storage boxes with the flip lids over each drawer. This was last weekend but he is there all the time. Just thought I would throw it out there.....

This is our setup at work, each drawer is removable, holds a ton of stuff, has moveable dividers, and is easy to configure. Each drawer is 5.5"x11"

What do you folks think about this. I found a unit on C.L., it's a an old drawing storage cabinet. It has 35 drawers, 1.5"W X 2"H X 44"L.

That's friggin niiice. I'd be all over it. But for a home garage it might be too wide for a lot of guys. If it were vertical it'd be perfect. Price seems very fair to me.

I had forgotten about the Addressograph cabinets.
And I used to work for them.
They are plenty heavy duty.
For those who don’t know, Addressograph made a mail addressing machine that used metal plates with stamped letters. Think about WW II style dog tags A tray of those tags was heavy.
A cabinet designed to store them could hold up to nuts and bolts with no problem.

As far as labeling is concerned, a trick I saw on a wood working site was to hot glue one of what ever was in the drawer on the face.
Pretty slick.

Any thoughts?

Good cabinet for small parts when the drawers are filled with small containers.

Priced okay.

Would work great in an electronics setup.

Putting a flat file cabinet under it (wide shallow drawers) could give one a great selection of different storage options.
