What would "the foil test" be?
How and why do we do it?

Since the OP bought a used unit he should test it to make sure it performs properly. The easiest test is to suspend a piece on aluminum foil vertically in the center of the unit for about 5-10 minutes. The unit should perforate the majority of the foil in a uniform pattern.

Ultrasonic cleaners are electro-mechanical devices and the transducers wear out over time.

I know this is an old post but thought to share the results of my online search after reading the comments over these 5 pages...
The price might not be a sub $200 but something to think about it.
Considering the heating requirements for a 6-6.5 L unit to be at least 300W, there is a DKSonic brand (also DeKang brand that could be related?), model DK-600PF, that has 180W of sonic power and 300W of heating. It's dual frequency with a bunch of other features.

I checked on Aliexpress and Alibaba and it seems that the big problem these days is the shipping cost, over $100. I think, if it wasn't that then that'll be a great price for great specs?!.

I checked Venor.ca and it seems to have decent prices with free shipping. A dual frequency 6L for 257 Canadian. Not bad.

I believe that the low frequency in the venor one is 28KHz and the DKSonic is 33KHz. Not a matter expert but I guess the lowest of the two is better. So a DKSonic with 28KHz would have been better.

I would skip the dual frequency unit and get this one. It has double the heating power. (400 watts for 6L is pretty impressive for a no name unit). A heated tank increases cleaning performance significantly.

Apparently it's not available on amazon. It's actually the same one I saw on the vevor website, that is also out of stock. the price is good too for 171 CAD and free shipping.

They have also a 300W heating power unit that is available for 167 CAD with what looks like an SS valve and manual dials:

There is another 300W on amazon with digital controls but more expensive, it seems that buying it from the vevor website still a good deal.

My understanding that heat is very important and a 300W should be "fine"? If adding to that the dual frequency, that could be a good trade off? using two frequencies for a more thorough cleaning for a more versatile situations.
That's why I thought the DKsonic dual frequency at 300W is overall good enough for general applications. Its price is a bit over 300 CAD.

Edit: revised the first link with the correct one.

Thanks for posting Dave,

Great specs for the price. I have the same one and have been very happy with it. the 10L looks like a great deal.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help the OP since he's located in Canada.

Guys,
Here's one that looks interesting. It's a German made Elma Ultrasonic branded as Stuller. This model is 7.5 litres with 160 watts ultrasonic power and 400 watts heating power. The tank doesn't show any significant signs of erosion and the seller guarantees it. It's $200 BIN and free shipping.

Elma is the leading manufacturer of commercial/industrial grade ultrasonic cleaners. An equivalent new unit would probably be around $1500.

Buy it, do a foil test and if it passes then you have a top shelf unit. If not, send it back as a SNAD since the seller guarantees it.

I might have to rewrite some of the above .. apparently they're not true "dual" frequency but dual waves, basically a variant of a single frequency unit.

That was 3 years ago...guessing he already bought one. Since this is the GJ, he probably has a back up as well.....

Ive got a great deal of experience with these machines. We have an engine building operation so it is one of the backbone of our operations. Power is your friend here.

Pro Ultra Sonic Is my preferred brand, have a 1911 for almost ten years and a couple of years ago picked up a 3624. 7,200 watts of power is insane. Cleans anything in minutes. I am well aware that these are over garage budgets, but the cleaning solution is the best I have ever used. We have tested at least 20 different brands attempting to get the perfect -finish. Their Pro-300 mix is EXCELLENT. Works great on carbon (if you have the power) and is safe on Anodizing etc (here you have to be careful with the power). Leaves a bright lustery finish that is just beautiful.
