How does it work out [good or bad] ???? home brew or ready made store brew????? happy new year to all GJ members.....bobbycoke :)

I use concentrated simple green in mine and it seems to work pretty decent.

We have industrial ultrasonic cleaners here at work. After much testing we figured out that a 12-16% concentration of Brulin 815 gave a great result. It turns out that a chemistry optimized for ultrasonic cleaning is the right answer. Surprise!

You need a basic (high pH) solution, not too much, and run it at 140-160 degrees to start. From there you can dial it in

We tested Simple Green. Awful smell and barely mediocre results.

You need the right chemical/water concentration and the right temperature to get good results. Ultrasonic cleaning works by creating vapor bubbles that collapse violently and knock the material loose. The chemistry does the rest. Too cool and the bubbles don't form adequately, too hot and they don't collapse with enough force. Too high a chemical/water ratio and the bubbles don't form (not enough water in the mix). Too low a chemical/water ratio solution and the chemical cleaning action is compromised.

We clean up varnish on labyrinth seals in about 3 minutes with this unit. If there was caked up carbon it might take 20 min. Granted it is 12 KW at 20 KHz so a very powerful unit. Optimization of chemistry and temperature is key. For reference we clean 10 foot long heat exchanger bundles which have finned tubes caked with carbon and varnish. Takes a few hours to do a good job. All the **** and oil destroys the cleaning solution though. We use a little titration kit to test the remaining capability of our chemistry.

We buy 815 by the barrel because the tank is about 450 gallons.

The key lesson for any user: there is a correct window of temperature and chemistry ratio for your ultrasonic cleaner. Too much or too little is not good. And cleaners optimized for ultrasonic use work way better.

Some people like PineSol for carburetors, I personally use Dawn soap and hot water for greasy auto and machine parts. I don't like the etched shiny look you get with a professionally overhauled car part, like they've been bead blasted or dipped in acid.

Hot water and any detergent oughta get you most of the way there. Choose something that's nice to paint if you don't want to repaint. Purple Power and the like are pretty caustic. If I have to wear gloves I don't want it.

I have used Evaporust in my 30 liter ultrasonic cleaner. This works really well for rust removal. The parts should be cleaned first. I have been using Simple Green. I am open to trying a different soap.

There are a lot of Ultrasonic specific chemicals. We use Safety Kleen's in ours at work, it is basically the same thing that is in the aqueous parts washer but at a different concentration.

Be careful with carbs. If whatever chemical you are using says not to use it on aluminum then dont use it on a carb. We tried one of the "purple" cleaners when we first got our ultrasonic and it was not kind to aluminum.

A Tip: The ultrasonic frequencies go through glass so what I have been doing is using different size jars and vases with water or solutions in them and dunking those in the tank. It is a lot simpler to clean out a jar than the tank. Also, you can put a lid on the jar after use to re-use the solution.

Be careful using solutions like Simple Green on aluminum.

Have fun!

What specific type of Brulin 815 are you using? I see both an MX and a GD type.

Castrol Super Clean. I put just water in the cleaner, then put parts with super clean in a bag or jar inside the cleaner. Keeps me from having to clean the machine out, and works 99% as well from what i can tell.

I often put small parts into Ziploc bags with the cleaner or Evaporust then put the bag into the tank, now filled with hot water.
My only regret with buying an ultrasonic cleaner was the first one. I bought too small at 6.5 liters. The one I have now is 30 liters. My wife uses it to clean the BBQ grills at the end of the season. I cleaned our favorite cast iron waffle maker in a few minutes. I will run out of time before I run out of uses for the ultrasonic cleaning. Try wheel bearings in Ziploc.

Very good information. Very critical to have the proper balance of chemistry, heat, and cycle time. Not all chemistry works for everything. The wash solution has to degas before it will clean well. We used 30 & 40 kHz ultrasonics for 30 years to clean brass and ss. I use Arm & Hammer M aero and it won't tarnish brass as many cleaners did. Cleaning oils off parts will contaminate the water quickly so for small jobs you may be dumping the water quickly. Our machines were designed to filter cutting oil.
