I was lucky enough to find and join this forum a few years back, and have enjoyed hour after hour of all the builds and projects on this board. So now finally its my turn. My plans have been done for some time, so long in fact that the county increased the snow load, requiring me to have some re-engineering done. So i have been given the go ahead to dig for the foundation and the permit will be in hand next week. As this is my first thread be patient with me. Here are some drawings to get started. The shop will be attached to the house via an existing 30'x30' breezeway. Building dimensions are 36'x72' x 2 full stories plus a 13 x 50 room in the trusses.

Barlow thanks. I used a lot of rock and logs from the property, I think its just rustic enough, shop will use same materials. Here's a couple of the house.

Thanks Sean! (Edit 2/23) Due to the Photobucket mess up Iam adding more photos to some of my responses, Hope you all don't mind. Drawings of the project below. Because of the snow load, its 135# per SF I had to have an engineer review my plans, he re-drew them to submit them for approval. The engineer was fantastic. image-7.jpgimage-8.jpgimage-9.jpgimage-10.jpg

Subscribed! beautiful house. I'm normally not a fan of the extra deep shops, but i think its the right way to do it to compliment the house and the lot. Will you need to build retaining walls or will the foundation be poured to hold back the dirt?

One question for you, what did you use to do the compass inlay in the patio concrete? Love it !

Thank you Joe13 the concrete foundation walls are designed as retaining walls

MSD shop thanks for your comments. I drew the compass on the patio then cut the design with a concrete saw (demo saw) freehand. I'm pretty proud of that. I then acid stained the compass using the same stain I used on the floors inside the house, then put a coat of sealer on it. (Edit 2/23 added material and photos). My place sits between to lakes and a river connects them. The trees in the area are almost exclusively fir trees with the exception of vine maples, cottonwood, and the occasional pine tree. The ground water is very high. The fir trees surrounding my place are big some of the 6' across at the base. these trees are basically soaking in the ground water. So they end up rotting out from the inside. I really wanted this tree to stay, but it turned out having to come out.

There was some rot in it.

When I bought this property the grade of the property was high. In this picture he upper height of that bank came about out to the log post closes to the house and dove down steeply in about 15' to where the house foundation started. I had a neighbor that was in desperate need for fill dirt, his property was basically a swamp. He brought in equipment and moves 600+ yards of material off my property and used it to get his to drain and dry out, it was a total win-win. It was mostly pit run, with big pockets of sand and hardpan so hard an excavator could barely scratch it.

I noticed on your plans the large garage door say's it's a fourteen foot door. Is that correct or will it be 12 feet in height. Just wondering. Beautiful home and looks like it will be very nice.

CaptDan At least one of the garage doors will be 14' tall. I am still juggling my options on sizes for these doors.

Thank you. It is my retreat from the real world.

(Edit 2/23) Added Pics. Encountered alot of water basically a small river running out of a gravel streak. Nothing some pumps won't take care of.

Re: new construction (yet unnamed)

Pretty uneventful day on the build. Placing rebar, and a little clean up with the excavator. Did have issues with engineering design on one of the shorter retaining walls. Plans called for a double mat in the 3' wide by 8" deep footing with 3" clear on the top and 3" clear on the bottom leaving both mats in the center of footing touching each other. Finally got a hold of the engineer, late afternoon, and he said there should only be 1 mat in the footing. So he had to mark up some drawings as i am having footing inspection tomorrow.

Re: new construction (yet unnamed)

hoho98925, you have a fantastic project going there. I rarely do this kind of thing but please caution your contractor about his excavation safety. As someone who regularly works below grade, your photos made me cringe.

Vertical cuts, loose materials and water are a recipe for disaster. The situation will only get worse when men are working in the narrow trench created by the future foundation walls and the face of the cut. Now is the time to bench the face of that excavation and pull the container back from the edge.

Sorry to be negative. I'm looking forward to the rest of this excellent build.

Great looking concrete work. Nothing like the old school Jahns system and MDO ply to produce awesome walls. Chamfer at grade and what looks like rustication strips at panel seams. Where did you find this guy? You're a half step away from architectural quality concrete. Well done!

Thanks. That guy is me. I do concrete for a living, mostly heavy civil, dams, bridges, parking garages, lots of pt decks. But also plenty of schools, shopping malls, office type buildings (Microsoft). I have been very fortunate to have a couple buddies help me out, and I get to show them a thing or two.

Nice job. Concrete is much stronger than block.

I do everything for myself... except concrete work. That's too much work for me
