This post is out of order do to reworking of this thread,
Truss issues. I could see from the ground that these trusses where not straight, this kind of thing really irritates me. The truss company came up and took a look at them, they acknowledge that the jigs used for building these must have been incorrect, but they weren't going to do anything about it. Apparently that's what you get for $12k these days.

using 2x8 that I bought for footing forms, one last time. This will be my storage area.

Lots of "wow!" going on here. Cool to see you're scoring some second hand materials. You're in a great part of the state too. I've spent a lot of time playing in the Snoqualmie Pass to Cle Elum area over the years.

I ended up using these doors for the wood shop. I am going to set them up as sliding barn doors.

Just an FYI, Owens Corning has defective shingles that been getting replaced in my neighborhood. I would guess yours are good.

I thought that was the same color I used on the house and garage, then I saw the pink wrapped shingles.

Some of the rock was a lot bigger then what I ordered, but I'm sure my rock guy can make it work.
Interesting story on my rock wall guy. I met him on a job a few years back that was over 3 hours away from my house. I could see that he had a real eye for placing rock, so i asked him if he would be willing to travel to my place to install my walls. Turns out his dad lives 1/2 mile from me, and that is where he stores his equipment.

You always hear when you are younger, "it's a small world", as you get older, you realize how much truth there is to that saying.

So I wanted to share my latest Craigslist acquisition. I bought 3 sets of metal clad vg fir french doors, 1 8'x6' clear aluminum. and 2 6'-8"x 6'-0" painted, plus one 6'-8x3' painted, and one 8'-0"x50" aluminum. All are Lowen brand, tempered glass, including most the hardware. Paid $330.00 for all. Guy worked for Lowen Doors and these were ordered wrong. And as a bonus I didnt have to go far to pick them up, which is rare for where i live. I need to build some frames for them and pick up some misc hardware to install. The doors are very similar to looks and quality of the Pella doors on my house, which cost 2900.00 a pair. Super stoked over this purchase!

The clear aluminum finished ones will go on the lower or main shop level. The painted ones will go for the wood shop, the mother-in-law suite, and the studio apt on the upper level.

I picked up the hand peeled log rails and posts for the front covered porch a few weeks back, and i just realized i hadn't posted any pics. So to fix that:




Looking at these photos, makes me realize that i have to be the one to stain them........uuuuuuuuuuuugh. my least favorite thing to stain is railing.

I tried that on the railings on my home, and was not pleased with the results. The Sikkens product that I use is very thick and does not spray well. It also states to not thin the product. To get an even coat you have to end up brushing the product after spraying, so that's how I will apply the stain, with a brush. The railing has so many nooks and crannies that it is just time consuming. The good news is that I am staining the railing and posts before I install it so I can lay them on some horses and have a flat surface to work with, allowing me to cover all the surfaces adequately.

I've seen yacht quality varnish jobs applied by an old man with a rag. Unbelievably fast, compared to brushing.

Just tried your suggestion. The rag works well on most the rail and posts,except for on the face ends of all the tenons, I will have to brush, they are too rough to use the rag. THANKS for your input

Good lord! This thing is amazing. It's huge, it's a funky shape, wild excavating and concrete work...just awesome build.

Hey Sean thanks for the comments.
The plan so far for the loft ( subject to change) is to install a glass wall at the open end with French doors in the center with transom window above and large windows either side that match the roof slope. There will be a set of log stairs from the ground up to a small deck. I plan on about 400 sqft of the loft being a guest studio apt. It will have a bath, kitchenette and stacked washer dryer. This is for friends to hang out when they visit. The rest of the area will be walled of from the studio, access via inside stair from below. The plan for " mother-in-law" area that is at the bottom of those stairs is to build out a double master suite unit with two masters, complete with full baths, another 3/4 bath in the common area and a kitchen/living/dining area. The plan would be to rent this unit out on a short term basis. Being between two lakes, and 15 minutes to the ski area, and with the amount of snow we get to play in, I think it will rent year round. That's how I plan on finishing those areas.

If these become guest quarters, you'll have to drywall this space. Will you be adding some blocking at the top and bottom of the "wall studs" ?

Wow. Had I not known at the outset that this was a garage build, I would swear from the early foundation photos that you were adding on...an office building!! Well done. Love the pooch, too. It helps to have a big dog around to hold down the floorboards to keep them in place.
