Under bench storage ideas.

What have you done under your workbench for storage/organization? Looking for ideas to use that wasted space.

On the garage, I have nut/bolt storage. On the wood shop side of the garage, I have some long boxes that contain different things, 1 with boxes of screws, next one has boxes of nails, another with a misc type fasteners, like staples and brads. Then one more with tubes of caulk and drywall knives.

Heavy and awkward stuff on shelves. Things like my generators and chainsaws.

I need to build a new workbench. Mine is what was in the garage when I moved in. It's just built into the exposed studs and there is a shelf but it is shallow set way under the bench. A real PITA to get to. I have just misc. bulky stuff stored there like the really long set of jumper cables (actually 2 sets), a roll of wire, couple of plastic boxes for various tool sets like a Craftsman socket set. The circular saw gets tossed under there along with the Sawzall.

Under that shelf at floor level my portable compressor wheels under there. I have an old small propane tank that was converted to an air tank for an airbrush. Ramps and my floor jack with removable handle (need a "real" floor jack) and stands get shoved under there too.

None of it is organized at all.

One end has a space with a steel door, this has my mig welder and stick welder locked in it. The shelf holds a plastic toolbox full of larger DiY/construction type tools, my general toolbag with smaller general household tools (as opposed to automotive stuff) and my evolution rage sliding mitre saw. On the floor under it is a selection of plastic one gallon gas cans and my floor jack.

It is the garage area for my roll around work tables.

In the garage it's one long shelf about 6" off the floor for heavy things that I don't actually want on the floor. A milk crate with chains I use for towing, duffel bag with ratchet tie downs, axle straps, etc., weight distribution hitch, other hitches, assorted tow balls & related items. In my basement I have a similar shelf for power tools in their own cases like the circular saws, Sawzall, drills & a few others. I added two, large, drawers right below the bench top but I don't like them in this location & may remove them.

I just put sliding doors on the front and shelving where I wanted... You can find the door tracks online for pretty cheap.

I built my two main workbenches each on 4 legs with something like 10" of vertical space free beneath the lower rail. I slide in portable toolboxes, my chainsaw, and my floor jack underneath them. In practice I keep a couple of boards leaning up covering those gaps under the benches to keep dropped small parts from going underneath. See pic: - metalmagpie

Mine has a single heavy shelf 6" off the floor that I use for bulky tools that aren't used daily. Nail guns, circular saws, sanders and hammer drill in their cases. "Specialty" tool boxes like taps and dies, wiring tools and supplies, plumbing tools and supplies.

I also have a smaller shelf that hangs from the bench that is offset back a little that has pop rivets and tools, staplers and staples and nails/brads/narrow-crown staples for the air tools.

I also have two slotted PVC pipes for cordless drills, hangers under my vise for some files and my 3lb engineer's hammer, and a pencil drawer from a desk that has pens, pencils, notepads, graph paper and other odds and ends.

I like drawers for storage, it is the most efficient use of space. There will always be extra space for where you sit and spots for bigger tools that you want out of the way.
I also use a rail to slide tools in spots that are wasted.

I plan on having a shelf about 1/2 way between the floor and the worktop but I'm also going to be using some of these on the floor too for storing car parts:

They are fish boxes used on trawlers and the like for packing freshly caught fish in. Pretty strong and stackable too.
Loads wash up on the beach where i walk my dogs. I have 3 decent ones now. They are about 3ft x 1ft in size and about 6" high.
I plan to add a caster to each corner so they can be wheeled under the bench.
