Under cabinet halogen to LEDs

When I did my kitchen, I had under cabinet LEDs installed. 120v halogen bulbs. It was a typical Home Depot/Rona type kit that came with the round puck lights that plugged into a junction box - the Romex comes through the wall into a junction box mounted under the cabinet and provides a non-grounded outlet for the lights to plug into.

The lights run from a dimmer switch so the dimming/power control for them is on the wall with the rest of the switches, not under the cabinet. This is how I like it.

Fast forward 8 years and I'd like to replace these with LEDs. Don't need Hue style lights, just 2700k LED is fine. But I want to retain dimming.

Anyone know of a 120v plug-in LED driver and light kit that can be dimmed from the wall switch? I'm guessing that most kits that plug in to a standard receptacle won't want to be dimmed from the 120v supply side.

I suppose the existing Romex could be connected to a small ELV LED driver under the cabinet, but the Lutron Caseta (would like the Caseta) dimmer that works with ELV is super pricey.

Thoughts?

Thanks! :)

I had LED puck lights installed under counter in my kitchen in 2014. I have a driver in my sink cabinet. and they are controlled with a Lutron Maestro dimmer. I believe that there is 14/2 romex feeding the driver. I can check when I get home and will get you a name and model number for the driver, if that is what you need. Let me know.

Like Pioneer1 says, Magnitude makes dimmable led drivers. You can get the LED strips off Amazon also. The aluminum covers also on Amazon make for a very professional looking installation. Make sure you select the correct driver output voltage and wattage to match your LEDs.

Do you have more information on the led replacements? I would like to do that with my halogen puck lights. Thanks

The listing was "10x G8 LED bulb dimmable 110v 2W 220 lumen COB 1505 SMD warm white". It was $11.95 last year and now its $12.99. They are technically brighter than the bulbs they replace but the light isn't as illuminating if that makes sense. You can't see as much even though these are "brighter". They just use like 10x less power. I only needed 6 but I think 2 burned out or went bad since I bought them so I used the others as spares. Oh and my dimmer is like a 3 step dimmer that you tap. Only two of the steps work now but there is still two brightness levels. Low and high basically.

There's another seller with some 4w bulbs and those might be better.

Sounds like you've got low voltage between the LED diver and cabinet. I've got 120v right to the puck lights. Thanks though.

Very nice, but I have one cabinet that's about 8" wide, best served by a puck light, not a strip like those.

Use the 9" on a diagonal. It's under the cabinet. No one will see it or notice it.
