Does anyone know where to buy some underground phone wire to run the wire out to a garage underground? I do not want an overhead wire. I want to bury the wire. Thanks.

Any electrical supply house will have telephone wire rated for direct bury underground use. You should be able to find it at Home Depot or the other big box stores as well.

Run it in some 1" PVC pipe, and when you do, add some string/twine. Like three strong strings going from one end to the other. That way, if in the future you want add something to the same pipe, the pull-thru string is already there!!!

Today phone line, tomorrow fiber-optics.

The PVC will also protect you from the dreaded shovel cut!

Thanks. Never thought about running regular phone wire in some 1" PVC pipe. I also like the string idea. I will check the cost of the phone wire and 1" PVC verse the underground phone wire. It has to go about 75' underground. Which ever is cheaper works for me. Thanks guys.

BDKS is right, don't buy wire from just any store, go to one that deals in electrical supplies (commercial/indutrial)only, as it's about 1/2 the price . Use the PVC, or borrow your neighbours new garden hose to run through. and bury.

Bought my phone wire at lowes. It's got steel cable with it like you would use above ground, but I buried it in small pvc to avoid being cut into. Plenty of room left inside for other cables etc.

Borrow my neighbours new garden hose? Then bury it? How to not get along with your neighbor. I think I will pass on that one. ha. I did not know the electrical supply stores had under ground phone lines. I will check this out. Thanks.

But I do like the idea of the PVC also because the thought of also running coax also at the same time for TV.

I put mine in 1 1/2 in. CPVC 3 ft. down (out of shovel and garden tiller range) from the pole to the shop, (thru the slab) and about 80 ft. to the house. I got all the phone wire and conn. boxes from the phone guy while he was repairing a storm damaged wire next door, for free, the phone co. around here is up grading to digital fibre optics slowly, and he wanted to see it done right, even stopped back and checked my install. The cable guy was the same way, very helpful, did all the connections for me and sealed the pipe ends too, all for a cold beer. LOL God, I love livin in a small town. RED

I just did the same thing yesterday.

2" thin-wall PVC is $2.99/ 10' stick at Depot, plus fittings. 100' of CAT5 is $20.00, 100' of RG6 is $21.00.

I ran 2 runs of CAT5, 2 runs of RG6, new cable line and 3 extra strings of surveyers string 35' to the new shop. To get it all in there, I wadded up some newspaper to the size of the ID of the pipe and tied a string to it. **** the newspaper and string thru the pipe with a shop vac. After pulling the string thru, tie in a piece of rope to the string and pull it thru the other way.

Firmly tape all your wires and strings and pull them thru with the rope. Leave LOTS of wire sticking out of each end for connections. Worked slicker than you-know-what.

My nickels worth,

Scott

PS Cat5 will give you 4 pairs of telephone line per sheathed wire. I ran 2 lines which gives me 8 pair. Lots of extra hook-up for intercom, computer, additional phone lines, thermostast, etc. The RG6 is for satellite and computer connections.

I'm digging that shop-vac trick, that's neat. (of course with my luck, I'd find a way to get the ball stuck about halfway through.

Instead of PVC, I used 2" black water pipe, the flexible stuff. It was cheaper than PVC, and I didn't have to worry about making PVC fit the contours of the curved trench. I had the electricians install a nylon pull string with their fish tape. Later when I pulled cat5, rg6, and telephone, I pulled another pull string through with it in case I want to install something else in the future.

Here's the pipe before the wires were pulled:

Only thing to keep in mind is that conduit that is buried, is a wet location. You should be using wet rated cable. Standard cat 5 wire is not rated for this application.

I might sujest that when you bury the wire you add several more in case you ever want a separate phone for a computer, intercome, or burgler alarm system.

And add SHIELDED to that. Even the "Wet Service Cat 5" (not always shielded; but available) is susceptible to cross talk (interference) if there are other unrelated conductors in the same conduit. Mine runs 20 feet out to my shop.

I have Cat 5 (2) security, coax (2) telephone (4), inter-com and "hard wired" garage door operator wires ALL sets individualy SHIELDED in my buried PVC conduit.

There is still a 1/4" Poly rope in there for future "up-grades."

Greenlee sells conduit measuring tape if you are buying your wire by the foot. It has a tensile strength of 130# Glue a few cotton balls on the end and do the shop vac trick. Record the starting numbers and the finishing numbers. VIOLA you have the length you need. You can probably use it to pull your wire.

When I built my pole barn back in 1989, I stopped by the phone company service shop and told them why I needed some underground phone cable. One of the guys took me out back and helped load a partial spool of cable in my car. "Just bring back what you don't use..." he said.

Funny thing was, about 5-6 years later, a phone company truck with a trencher arrived at my house with "a work order to install an underground line to the pole barn."

I did not read allof the post. I had my phone company do mine to my shop at no cost. All I did is ask. The service guy came out set the box outside the shop and hooked it up then a crew came out and buried it later. Idid think I was going to have to pay untill the service guy saw it was not crossing property lines.

Thank's guys. All the information here is very helpful to me and I am sure others also. Our phone co. here does not do much of anything for free. Plus I would want to pull more than just the phone wire now.

ran a telephone wire from my attached garage to my back garage 25 feet away with regular in PVC pipe ? Had problems ? Verizon came and says sound like a wet wire? then I told him about the underground wire? He say here is 50 feet of underground wire in a silicone tube. Put that in the summer. Now winter came and the phone started the same thing? disconnected and no problem? I buried the wire about a foot down? Must be still getting wet? The phone I had hooked up also shorted out? Any suggestions ?

Fiber is going to run in the small town live in in 2021. If they only do aerial installs I was thinking of burying some PVC pipe to get it underground. My question is how would the 2 ends of the PVC pipe be terminated ?

Since you're talking aerial put a weather head at the pole end & bring the building end up inside the building. Or put a weather head at both ends, drip loops at both ends, & drill through the building wall. Downward from inside to outside (keeps water from running UP into the building) then seal around the wire going through the wall.

Note this is a 14 year old zombie thread, revived in post #27:

You can get CAT5E gel filled and run it......it is direct burial rated.....I not only would 1 but 3 different strands of it of one for phone one for internet and one for cameras.. Also I would put 1.5" conduit to allowenough extra room for future needs.....just speaking from 45 years experience ..........also bury no less than 18"

Point taken. I have also retrieved an old thread and just carried on like it was current. I find it funny even amazing that I even found the subject I was looking for to begin with.

This is important. Everyone, who puts a dry rated phone wire or coax or cat 5, or electrical in a conduit. or direct bury. The conduit will fill with water, and the insulation will eventually let the water in.

Yes, I did this before i knew better. But I only did it with phone wire. Want to hear the load hum on my phone line? It's louder than the conversation.
