From the looks of those foundations and the bolts sticking up, there was a lot more machinery in that pit, probably steam driven.

Looks like it was a water plant specialy when you see the crops as that is a giveaway to a circular irrigations crop spray system. My guess would be they pump water differently now for the crops.
