Popular Mechanics came up with a pretty simple and cheap solution for lighting under the car.

Now that's a great hack right there. I have some 3' emergency flo lights (battery backup) - that might be a good use for one.

make sure you get a good strong cover on the lights. First wrench that gets dropped on the bulbs and many swear words will follow.

That's a pretty slick idea and approach for lighting. I would put a wire cage over the light diffuser add a little protection. I think 4' would be too long - I like Chris' idea of using the 3 footer.

I thought these looked cool but it says they are no longer available. You could use the LED ropes for a similar purpose. They are usually wrapped in a thick clear rubber tube.
