We had a box installed on the outside of the shop to give power to a pond pump some exterior lights. Right now that box is capped as are the wires in it. I need to bury cable/wires underground for about for about 25 feet to get them where I need the plugs for the pump and light.

How deep do I need to go? I have sprinkler and underground drains in the way. And does it need to be in conduit? I’ll be burying this by hand with a manual trench tool

GFCI protected at source at no more than 20A at120V you can use UF-b direct buried with at least 12 inches of cover.

In my home town it was 18" for years but in 2018 they changed it to 30" with sand bedding. GFCI protected all in conduit and no more direct burial wire. A home owner can still do the installation but the location has to be mapped and a copy provided to the city.
