Understanding the Stanley 35W HID Spotlight

Didn't want to clog up the good deals thread so here is a post on the $10 Stanley 35W HID spotlight on closeout at Walmart. That is an excellent deal on a high-performance spotlight with a couple of caveats.
First, they use a 12V 3ah sealed lead acid battery which will self-discharge and be compromised if not charged every few months. Won't know if the battery is good on mine until the charge cycle is complete. If you were lucky enough to snag one at $10 and it is malfunctioning on the internal battery don't despair, it probably sat on the shelf for an extended period and battery sulphation would be a likely suspect. Take it back for a cheerful refund at Walmart if you don't want to repair it or contact the manufacturer and see if they will repair/replace or send/sell a new battery. Manufacturers 1 year warranty is your friend, save the recipt.
Second, the runtime is not real great owing to the nature of the device as it draws considerable power to operate the ballast which needs to make some big voltage to fire the HID bulb. With a healthy battery it appears 20-30 minutes is about all it will give per charge. Once power drops below 12V the light shuts off. Of course it will run for extended periods on the vehicle charging system.
I've read it has 3200 lumens output at startup which is astounding for a handheld (although heavy) spotlight. Things out to 1000' are lit up nicely, some reports indicate road signs are visible at up to 2 miles, other reports include accounts of the Police being summoned to investigate users who were operating the HID Spotlight but otherwise behaving themselves. There are 2 models on closeout, the HID0109 and the HID010, the HID010 is the newer version and apparently does not have the metal bars or the hi/lo switch the 0109 has. Equivalent performance.
This is not your standard incandescent spotlight and does not operate on the same principle. If it seems to operate a little bit differently than what you are expecting, there are several hundred posts on candlepower forums (flashlight enthusiasts) pertaining to the care/feeding of Stanley 35W HID spotlight.

Dose it say what kind of HID bulb it uses? High pressure sodium, metal halide?

I was wondering what the hype was. Personally I hate those big bulky spotlights regardless of how bright they are. I have no need for one. Its just too large for anything I do.

So what is there to do if Stanley has no replacement parts (I think I read that in another thread somewhere) and your light is not working properly? Is there a way to find a replacement or bring the old battery back to life?

One of mine is completely dead - plug it in, it has nothing but a green light and it never turns on. The other will charge normally but (so far) only stays on full power (green light- not plugged in) for a few seconds before reducing power and going to yellow. I'm giving it another charge now.

These are both 109s bought from State College, PA.

I use this kind of light all the time in the summer and would LOVE to get these to work...

I prefer LED over HID for my flashlights. HIDs do not like being turned on and off too much within a short period of time. But they are damn good for throw!

bamackc: Unsure but metal halide sounds right, there are several posts on cpf pertaining to the type of bulb used. Some have shimmed the bulb for tighter focus, some have changed to a different temperature bulb.
srmofo: No hype, even at full price the spotlight offers a ridiculous performance/price ratio. At $10 on closeout the deal is even better. Sorry it doesn't fit your needs.
Trucky: I've lurked on cpf since my first ARC AAA, don't post much and still have a lot to learn. If someone has illumination needs, cpf is the go to place. Many people have no clue how far lighting technology has come in the past few years. What you buy at the box stores is usually 3-4 generations old compared to what is available on cpf.
Posaune: The light that goes green immediately on charging - does the area light work on it? Does it work on the 12V cigarette lighter plug using a running Car as the power source? Those tests will answer any question about the internal battery. The light has a limited warranty for 1 year through Stanley. Either return promptly to Walmart for exchange (doubtful) or refund, or return prepaid to manufacturer for repair or replacement. When I called Stanley for support they referred me to Baccus Global who was the supplier to Stanley. Baccus was closed for the day when I called but all reports from cpf indicate they are good to deal with. Their info is in the owners manual. If you choose the repair/replacement option it might cost a few bucks to ship the light or perhaps they will just send you a new battery. The only component not readily available might be the ballast. Someone posted on cpf that a replacement battery was available.
On the light you have that is reducing power after startup and the battery indicator light goes yellow (orange on mine) after a few seconds...There is a boost mode that starts the HID bulb at 60W and drops it back to 35W once lit and running, that is normal operation for the light. How long will it run on yellow (orange on mine)? Keep track as that battery might need to be cycled several times to reach maximum capacity. Again, test it on a running Car with the 12V cord and that test will confirm if the internal battery is just weak or has completely failed.
itsvegas: Try the MTR method in the other post, it took 3 days but worked for me. The hardest part was finding one available for sale.

Any idea on how much replacement battery costs? Mine immediately goes to yellow once I turn on the light. This one was in a sealed package and does NOT have the high low switch in the back. Mine slowly ramps up but has that ugly shadow from the ceramic return wire coating. If I had paid the asking price ($70 from Amazon) or even the previous clearance price ($30), I might be returning it.

For the price paid, it is a great fun light to play with. From utility wise, I am not so sure. Personally, I would love to get a non-spot light version. For example, at least for me, wall of light such as provided by true HID projector would be lot more useful.

Confirmed Baccus Global (Stanley supplier) will replace batteries under warranty. If it doesn't make 25-30 minutes runtime mine is going for a new battery.

Picked one up at the White Lake Mi store yesterday. It turns on monemtary, then shuts down. I think it just needs a charge. Theirs one more left at that location, but the package was pretty rough. Its on a clearence rack, near the automotive, if anybody is interested.

Picked up three yesterday in Hartford, left three on the shelf. First one should be done charging soon - hopefully it works out. Mine have metal bars and a hi-lo switch (?) but maybe I'm confused. I'll have to double check the model when I get home.

Do we have to ship the light to them on our dime? OR they give a prepaid shipping label?

I got one of this spotlight from of our members here (thanks pault28), I was planning to mod it to Li-ion batteries if the batterry is dead. But when I fully charge it, to my surprise, it does hold a charge. Here's a pic of it when I was playing with it. It was well worth every penny.

I got one a couple years ago, I had it apart and took pictures of the insides, I will see if I can find those pics.

As for a light, I find it works well, it's sort of heavy and, yeah, the battery life ain't all that, but I know I can get at least a half hour worth of light from it. The battery is a 12V 3Ah lead-acid cell, rather commonly available.
