Unheated detached garage

Hey all,

New to the forums and looking for some advice for those that have BTDT!

I live in Quebec where we have very cold winters -5 to 15 degrees F on average.

I've got a detatched garage where I want to actually start doing some work on the car on my day off. It's 20x14, has an old drafty uninsulated door which I'm waiting to replace when we decide on the cosmetics. It's got a 60A service.

The interior walls have got approximately an R4 (1" foam and 1/4" OSB), the soffits are closed and the roof is completely bare and uninsulated.

The plan is to slap a heater in the in the winter, warm it up for an hour or two and then go and wrench. The problem is that without a serious BTU heater (which needs ventilation), my choices are slim and revert to electricity.

The plan is to use one of those 5000w 30A shop heaters but I need to do something to keep heat in.

Basically my question comes down to insulating the roof with Roxul R14 batting vs spray foam. Both offer the same R but one costs 400$ and the other is 900$. I'm leaning towards the batting mostly due to ROI. Additionally I'm considering redoing all the walls to R14 as well but am questioning the ROI on upgrading the walls R value at the moment and am thinking the roof is probably going to give me the best bang for the buck and should keep the heat in nearly as much as it would if I was at R4 or R14 on the walls.

I'd love to get some of your opinions on this!

Thanks,

Ok well that'll save a bit going to pink but I am curious how both would last exposed between the rafters without being covered in vapour barrier?

If you shop allows you to get far enough away from one, look at the VAL6 diesel powered heater. There is a thread here somewhere.
