My brother sent me these pictures of his new toolbox he got off Craigslist and asked me if I knew who made it. The only thing I can see is a property tag that’s faded and torn up. He lives in the Dallas area, so I’m wondering if it was used in aircraft maintenance possibly. But if anyone has any other ideas I’m all ears.

Very cool. What did you use it for?
I briefly used it has a large drill bit/ tap cabinet. The foot brake was nice but it failed to be a good cabinet for what I had intended because I placed a great deal of weight in each drawer. I have had great luck with friction slides in the past but on shallow drawers that span over 26" in length they have a tendency of binding under a heavy weight load.

My cabinet was in great shape and I bought it from an estate sale at the right price (close to your brother's price). I'm a sucker for unusual tool boxes.

He’s a budding woodworker and amateur small engine mechanic. So he’s unlikely to fill it too full for now at least.

So after some brain jogging and the weird *** memory I’ve been equipped with, I remembered seeing a chest like that in an old Craftsman catalog that has been PDF’d. Starting in 1977 or 78 and ending in 1985/86 Sears cataloged this chest in their lineup starting at $999.99 and ending at $1199.99, or roughly $3-4000 today.

I'm in the Dallas area too, so if he wants to make a quick 25 bucks on it I'll buy it from him haha. It looks like a Proto to me to be honest. Craftsman had one similar but I don't think it had the cabinets on the back and the front cabinet was on the opposite side.

If I hadn’t just been scrolling through these old catalogs I would’ve said Maybe so lol. But this was the one I found just today.

Oh wow yep you are right! Pretty awesome that he found that. I look at Craigslist and marketplace daily for tool boxes, didn’t see that one listed. Lucky guy!

I'm sorry I was wrong.... Waterloo. This was mine.

That is so funny because I checked my top box at work and it is a Waterloo, I wonder if they were making boxes for Proto at one point. If you look at my link above they certainly used the same handles.

I’d be surprised if they didn’t. They contracted with a lot of brands over the years.
