I am currently going to fix up the garage at the new house. I came across this cool looking vintage tool box (from a friend of a friend). I really want to buy it and restore it, but have no idea of what its worth. He's asking $700 for the thing, and I'm just not sure if its worth it because its needs restoration pretty bad. It has some rust and needs repaint. Here are the pics he sent me.

Also, he said he would throw in this Motorcraft box with it.

Am I being taken advantage of? The box just looks so cool.

Thanks guys

Might be one of those "eye of the beholder" things. On the one hand, it would be worth nowhere near 7 bills for me. Now someone who knows will come along and say it's a steal. I can see it would be fun to restore it, though. Let us know what you decide, and if you go for it, keep us up on your restoration efforts.

700 bucks for a box he probably got for nothing/next to nothing isn't a good deal to me, especially since he doesn't treat it like a 700 dollar box. Outdoors and being used as a chain storage shelf? Not a $700 item.

I'd say that was above retail in a high priced antiques/ vintage store. While there is a demand out there he will wait a LOG time trying to get that price.

Second, those were NEVER heavy duty setups. it was basically advertizing for the product, so it won't wear well in heavy use.

$700 is absurd.
I have United Delco double stack in a little bit nicer shape than that one.
If there is someone out there that just has to spend big money on one, I'd come off mine for $500 (still absurd in my opinion).

Construction-wise, they're kinda flimsy. It feels like a cheap-o, hundred dollar roller chest. The drawer slides are ****, and the door latches are less than heavy duty.

All that being said, I can appreciate it because, after all, it IS vintage. Not to mention mine came out of a buddy's father's Chevrolet dealership.

If you have $700 burning a hole in your pocket, you can be quite choosey about which vintage tool box/chest you buy WITHOUT it needing paint/restoration.

I wouldn't pay $400 for the pair if they were NEW.

I have that same one in better condition that my mom picked up for me at a yard sale. it was $5. I'd say $100 max if you just have to have it.

$700        (wipes away tear from extreme laughter)

Take a 0 off the price -->$70 and then maybe start to consider it. Is it neat, o yea, sure, but as far as practicality, no way, no how.

There were several boxes like that at the recent Iola Car show in WI and they were going for $75 - $150 depending on the amount of patina i.e. rust. As for me, $100 for both!
