Unknown CORNWELL Tools - Anyone know what these are?

I bought two Cornwell tools that I have never seen before. The smaller one is stamped "17 Cornwell 40" & the larger one is stamped "2 Cornwell 43". Upon research, I came across an identical one to the larger tool w/ a different stamping though, it is stamped 'SDS Cornwell 43". Any ideas on what these things are/were used for? They appear to be in "Wartime Finish".

Weird stuff right. I have many friends who are aircraft mechanics, machinist, etc. I contacted all of them first & they were all stumped as well. One machinist friend though some type of tappet tool. I was thinking top end as well, perhaps some WWII era radial engine...who knows. I have quite simply never seen anything like them.

Also, The small one is stamped "40" while the larger one is stamped "43". The ONLY other one I could find on the web was identical to the large one & was stamped "43" w/ a different prefix though. So I think the 40 & 43 are model numbers which could mean there could be at least to more sizes.

An absolute mystery to me. I actually bought them to use as miniature sanding pads by gluing small pieces of sandpaper to the flat of the rectangles for hard to reach spaces. Then, once I had them home & cleaned, I got curious as to what they are actually for.

There is ONLY one I found on line (the person posting has no idea either - listed as "Unknown Tool"). This one has the stamping on the shank as opposed to the handle as both of mine are. Also, both of mine have number prefixes, this one has capitol letters. Mine are "17 Cornwell 40" & "2 Cornwell 43" - this other one is marked CORNWELL on one side of the flat shank & "SDS 43" on the opposite side of the flat shank.

Those have come up before, either on the Cornwell thread or the Toolboxes Megathread. The boxes and logo resemble the late 30's and 40's, except for the pulls, which were those coolass geometric Art Deco style, sheet metal formed. If you look in the 1941 cat, all the pulls are that style except for one box and one new roller they called a Redbird. If you're trying to date that stack, I think the consensus was sometime between 1941 and 1950's, as in that 1952 cat that RTM linked. I could be wrong.

I posted this a couple years ago in that thread when I first got it so it could be the same one.
