Unknown (german?) vise

Hey

This is my first post here. Bought a vise a couple of days ago, got this one for around 80$. I have now used most of yesterday on searching the vise repair and other vise threads, but could not find any that matched this one. So if anyone know what this is please tell me The jaws are 13.7cm or 5.39 inches. And i cant find any mark from the manufacturer or anything on it. And was also wondering if anyone know where I can get new jaw inserts? been searching on ebay etc but haven't found anything yet, they have 3 holes for fastening.

(this is after I have been using wire wheels and wire brush to remove old paint and some "rust".

I see similarities with Boley, Leinen and Schlegel. Its probably not an Leinen because of the design of the front of the vise. And probably not a Schlegel vise because of the sides ain't smooth and the locking of the spindle are underneath the handle and not above.

It might be a Boley because I see they have alot of different designs depending what type of work they are meant for.

DK: instead of the link you surely can post more pictures of a cool vise on your thread. it looks like my Leinen and has some similarities to Bison. you might be right in your choices and maybe we'll find the answer or not. it might also be a knock off from China or India if there isn't any name on it.

another good spot to post a couple pictures would be in the Tools of the Old World since it's either European or a copy.

Been offline for a while. Used a grinder to fix (grind) the anvil part a bit to flatten it, and used a Pressure Washers to remove the last rusty and oily stuff before I putted it in a crystal soda+electricity bath

But it seems i have to long distance between the electrodes, or to little crystal soda. Cant find that stuff here, every store I have gone to: "what? do they still produce that?".... Manged to find it online on a Norwegian store (since i live in norway), 25kg (55lb) for 35$ us, but the shipping cost was around 50$....

Will provide more pictures when I check the bath tomorrow

Sodium bicarbonate, (bicarb, baking soda), will also work, if you're having problems getting hold of washing soda/soda crystals, (sodium carbonate). Caustic soda/lye, (sodium hydroxide), will also work, though you just need to be a bit more cautious when using that, especially the mixing phase. Just add a little bit of powder to the water at a time, as it generates quite a bit of heat as it dissolves, and if you have sensitive skin, make sure you wear gloves when sticking your hands in the solution, even though it'll only be a fairly weak caustic solution, so it shouldn't pose much, if any, of a risk.

Checked the bath today, not much to write about water and electrodes looked similar to yesterday. so i removed the electrodes and grinded them, then put it back in, now something was happening. So I decided to make some new electrodes.

To the left old electrodes had 4 of those, 1 in the middle, is the new one, welded the bar to the plate.

After 14 hours with the old.

After 30 min with the new one.

DK: it looks like you are cooking cast iron nicely now. you might want to try checking the spa chemical sellers if some of the other things are not available. some guys use baking soda. what chemical are you using now and how much for that tank? is the tank about 10 or 15 gallons or bigger?

also you might go in your GJ profile and put in your location which it sounds like you live in the UK or some country near there. also click on Avitar and download a picture of anything you like to show up under your name.

The tank is 15 gallons filled with around 12-13 gallons of water and 400g of Sodium carbonate (crystal soda), 24v and its pulling around 18Amps. If i had more crystal soda i would probably go for around 600g-800g total.

Tried most of stores here, but i live quite rural. Have some left, might be lucky. Could probably bake some baking soda in the oven, to make some more crystal soda.

DK: I'm 100% Norwegian and living in the US and have never been to Norway yet. i think the last relatives to live there were great great grand parents so i might have a few cousins still there.

is Troms up north above the Artic circle? i think there are a couple other GJ members that live near you. if i remember who they are i'll ask them how they do their electrolysis.

it looks like yours is cooking pretty good now so keep us posted on results and always take a lot of pictures to post if you can.

Yes its north of the arctic circle, but now i have 25kg of it on its way, for around 40$

Been off to work and got a lot of other stuff taking up my time, but here's an update.
