Hi All,
I had looked at this box yesterday, full of misc hardware, I didn't want the contents but the box intrigued me. I went back today and it sold about 45 minutes before I got there : ( . I had commented on it yesterday ,that I had some interest but wasn't going to dump the contents and leave a mess ya 'know.
Anyhow lower left in this picture. Latches on top as well as the carry handle. It cantilevered out to expose two trays /divided (think Kennedy cantilever) on each side. Looked like the trays were aluminum. Outside covered in black leatherette. Latches were made by Eagle I believe. So did I ^*($ up and walk away ?

If it is, what I think it is, that is a piano repair man's tool box from ~1920-1930 IIRC.

I have pretty much the same box as OP, from Grandpa(not mine) the piano tuner. Its got some tags with the tuners contact info, and how to tie a couple knots. Red velvety stuff inside. It does a good job of holding random small hardware.

Thanks to Ebay I found some further pictures. I am convinced it is(was) a Knickerbocker Case Co. toolbox.

It reminds me somewhat of the service toolboxes one used by television repairmen.

Long ago and far away - before the transistor and integrated circuit, televisions had vacuum tubes and were heavy pieces of furniture. You would call the local repair guy to come out and replace a tube or a smoked flyback transformer or clean the tuner. As a kid in the 60's it was magical watching the repairman come to the house with multiple cases like this - one filled with tools and another fulled with tubes.

These toolboxes were used by many trades. We had a neighbor who spent his post- WWII life as a furniture refinisher - he had a similar box filled with all sorts of bottles of finish and dozens of tinted shellac sticks for burn-in repair.

I wish I could find a toolbox like that in good shape - so I can add it to my collection of one more thing that I really don't need!
