Unknown vice?

Hi all, I am in England and was directed here by a forum user on MIG-WELDING.co.uk. It's a similar site to yours.
I have recently got hold of a vice and have been unable to find another one similar, the suggestion is it might be American? I have spent hours searching the net and the only similar ones are mini portable vices, but mine is so much bigger. it has no markings apart from a patent number on the feed bar end, 9368,1905. The pictures aren't great but passable. It may have been black originally and seems quite well built. The strangest difference is the slider is round solid steel and directly below the feed screw. Anyway really enjoying reading all the great projects, tool restorations etc. I restore very small tools and have recently purchased a small myford lathe. an ML4,ok for hobbie work but not for accurate or big jobs ha ha.

US patent 9366 is " for improvement of vibrating propellers ". I had less luck on quick access to UK patent numbers but I am sure, if you take the time, you will find out to whom 9366 was issued. That would hopefully lead to the manufacturer of the vise.

Thank you for trying. I have tried variouse different country patents but being just four digits doesn't fit the normal formats? Even tried 93681905 as a single number. still no luck. I wondered if the 1905 was year of patent or year of manufacture? I just couldn't believe there are no other vices on the internet that have a round slide below the screw thread? Even having four bolt holes to bolt it to the bench is unusual. It has no play or slack, it moves very smoothly and overall is a nice size.
So maybe not American?
Anyway really glad I came on here as your tools are a really nice change to the brit ones. Brian.

Still no joy, I have spent hours and hours looking through the"show us your vice" thread" nothing even close?�� I have just refurbished a record No 5 vice and a record 24" stillson, I find it hard to believe my vice is the only one on the planet? It is the round bar slide that makes it so different. And had a great result I came across a hand crank bench grinder that is badged "HERO made in US of America.fantastically smooth and in very good original condition,I will put pictures up when I get to my desktop pc ,brian.

First of all, just to confirm, this is what I see in the photo:

US Patent 9368 was granted to J.D. Ostott of Springfield, Ohio, for a saw-gummer, an apparatus used to gum saws. The apparatus did have a main screw. But it was patented in 1852. And it's highly unlikely that it has any bearing on your vise.

One explanation might be that "PATENT" is marked on their like "PATENTED", without a patent number, and No. 9368 refers to a model number, and 1905 is the date of manufacture.

That's all I got. It's a head scratcher for sure.

ARK: those smallish open screw vises don't get a lot of love or attention and sorry i don't recognize anything about it to give you any clues to help your searches.

there were so many of that style made and i'm thinking it was only a couple or very few actual manufacturers that put other company's names on them to make it even a bit more confusing.

Thank you both,it may not be American,it is a fair size vice and not a mini one,four inch jaws and just under five inch fully open. I have quite a few mini portable vices and yes the solid bar slider is a common feature with some having two, one above and one below the threaded screw. I suppose thinking about it if it was of a good brand then the maker would be proud enough to have it easily seen. Maybe it's a European one? We get all sorts here in England including polish french and occasionally American, I have three sets of HK Porter bolt croppers and now a handcrank bench grinder "HERO" all from America. Here's what I got. There were only 4 vises patented in 1905 in the UK, that included the word "Vise" in the title. Here is the link to the results of a 1905 search for vise (in title) patents worldwide. Unfortunately, for a lot of these older patents the documents don't exist due to WWII.

I know but like most unusual tools it's nice to get the history. I still need a good excuse to come on here ha ha. keep finding American tools over here which of coarse gives me more excuse to post them up to find out about them. I even have a small tape measure which happened to have my surname on it,,,,, made in usa for Canadian market.
