I picked up this collet closer at tool Disneyland last year and never got around to cleaning it up. Now that's it clean, I can't find a single mark on it that betrays if manufacturer.

It's rather short and accepts 5C collets. That's about all the info I have

I'd inquire over on PracticalMachinist, there literally have been hundreds of draw tube lengths over the decades. A member over in their antique section actually bought a big quantity late last year and was selling them for quite awhile, IIRC he had ~50 different lengths/tapers/etc.

If I were to guess I would say that it belongs to an indexer or some tooling like that. It seems way short for reaching through a lathe spindle.

no neat sig line

I'll look into that. I had a suspicion that it wouldn't make it through the lathe headstock but who knows how many different models of lathes are out there and all the different configurations.

Jim mentioned a South Bend but that's the same brand lathe I have so I know it wouldn't work for mine but that didn't mean all. The collet closer for it is very similar but about a foot longer and that's after I cut it down 3/4". This stubby little guy is gonna take some searching to figure it out

It's vaguely possible it fits some uncommon production-style speed lathe or compact turret lathe, or an early Cataract lathe, but I suspect it's too short even for them.

I'd say Larry is correct- it's most likely for an indexer head or tool grinder workhead.

Doc.
