looks like something from the printing industry that would use large flats for film and such.

im sure there are many industrial uses for them, but thats where i have seen them used most.

nice score!

That will make an awesome toolbox and you stole it for $300. They go for crazy money and $300 for each section would be a pretty good price the bases alone new are about $150 I think.

Just be careful not to overload them they are usually sold as plan files or for printing flats and distort with weight and all the ones I've seen use plastic wheels in the guide tracks.

Show us pictures when full!

I got one of those for free from a friend because his office was throwing them out. It sat in my barn for a couple of years, until I sold it for $40 about 6 months ago. Though mine was not in such good shape and only had about 1/2 the drawers.

I believe they're called "flat files" and are for storing blueprints and other large-format printed documents. I thought of using it for a toolbox, but it didn't seem very practical, and I didn't have room for it in the shop anyway......

Yeah, every company that manufactured or built anything had a ton of those sitting around that really are not necessary anymore now that everyone has computers with Auto CAD and moderately priced plotters.

There should be a lot of these on the market as old companies move to China or just go under in this economy.

I've seen them used as map cabinets with each drawer holding a different map sheet. I'm not how much weight in tools it'll hold. Looks good.

$300 still seems high to me, but I can't really tell how big it is. Are you going to put casters on it?

what kind of slides is it on? Friction?
What is the height of the drawers?
i was told over the phone that is has bearing slides and that the drawers come out all the way. the drawers are 2inchs tall
oh yeah, I remember that box. That is badass. No doubt yours will look tight too. Are you going to make custom drawer pulls out of snap on hard handles?
thanks for the vote of confidence you made me :spit: my tea when I read what you said about the hard handles... now that you mention it.. you got me thinking...

After 20 minutes a lady answered and said i was the 10 caller!! and that she didint even want to take my info...that the first caller was going to pick them up in 4 hours, I told her I live nearby and can pick them up in 10 min. she wouldnt have any of it. So i missed out on a great set of arch/eng plan cabinets. DANG...owell someone got a sweet deal today.

I dunno, I work for an engineering firm and we still have all of ours and they're all full. When we do a remodel, we get copies of their old prints and all the updates since it was built to use as as-builts. We don't keep too much of our own stuff as it's all archived on the server and double backed up to DVD. They are usually very full of paper and due to the age of many of them, they don't glide real well.

Still a nice score though if you have the room for them.

I have several of these in use. Great for pipe wrenches, prybars, handsaws, circular saw blades, etc. Price is a bit high for me, but that one looks nice!

Comment: why not load the drawers full? It's designed for paper, and paper is heavy! Fill those drawers full of paper, and I imagine it would be similar in weight to tools!

I agree. Those units are heavy duty. Only drawback is that I haven't seen full extension drawers on them; they only open half way or so.

I got a cabinet very similar to that for free from a friend. Had some surface rust etc. Cleaned it up and painted it a nice red. Haven't had a chance to put it to use yet though. Put it up in the loft about 6 months ago and haven't touched it. This thread is a nice inspiration.
