I wish this thing had not been marked up with a punch.. Other than that it should clean up nice.

Does anyone know anything about this old Craftsman ratchet? I found nothing on alloy artifacts....

Seen it before, had a 1/2in and 1/4 in traded in at work, not sure how old they are though.

Delving back into the depths of the Journal, here's a post that has pics I took and some comparisons to other ratchets.

Since that post, it's been determined that Moore Drop Forge did produce that ratchet, not one of the other manufacturers as pondered in the post. I'm fortunate enough to have one that looks like it just came off the shelf - my 2nd favorite Craftsman ratchet model (next to the RHFTQR ones).

B&WP,

That is indeed a V-series (unmarked) and was made by MDF. These box head ratchets were available in 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", and 3/4" drives and were available between about 1947 and 1958. They dissappeared when the V-series teardrop ratchets were introduced by MDF. There is one exception, the 3/4" drive Craftsman ratchet, made by Danaher, and still sold today, is the last vestige of this ratchet design.

I think you got a keeper there; in my opinion, the punch marks do not detract from the ratchet. Clean it up, lube it, and put it back to work.

I have one of those in the 1/2" flavor, that is still in great shape. That old timer has been there and back for sure!

I have this 1/4" and 1/2". Just bought another 1/4" at the flea market a few days ago. I am looking for a 3/8" if anyone has one.

Your has a groove in the handle unlike mine.
