Update on old milling stand re-purpose and a huge CL score

I had a few old threads regarding what to do with an old milling machine stand I got for less than $40. I blasted it and painted it and made a welded/wood top for it. But was still not sure what I was going to do with it. I was waiting for some inspiration to hit me.
Well it may have hit me in the form of an incredible deal I got off CL. In my area a guy had a listing where he was selling a "light" for $25. It appeared to be an authentic old nautical marker light. Obviously I figured it was too good to be true but with some effort I got him to respond. He actually delivered it to my work for $30. Its all brass, bronze and copper and stainless. The real deal. Weighs about 50 lbs









I thought this might be a perfect display item to go on the vintage machine stand. Bought some 2" pipe couplings and set it on the stand.

What do you guys think? Obviously I will wire up a light. Add some accents etc.

Or is this over the top gaudy? Continue in this direction? I may make a new top with slightly lighter wood and slightly larger. Put some nautical rope around the silver stand pipe and then add some accents like a massive conch I found on the islands near us.

I'm lusting after your pieces. But I don't think they make a good pair. The stand, in my opinion, needs to stay a bit more machine related and the lamp in a nautical setting. Also what grabs me there is the mixed materials, iron stand, hot rolled steel, aged wood, galvanized steel, and then brass and glass. The enhanced writing on the stand identifying it as a machine and then the fancy lamp fight for my admiration for each.

To understand a bit more from where I'm coming from, I really like old machine tools and have no real nautical interest. So for me that is the waste of a good tool stand.

Nice work. You have an outstanding shop mascot and the makings of a great display table. Rename your shop "The Beacon" and fill the table with vintage restored tools.

U could always trade the stand to me I got a arbor press that would fit it nicely ever since I saw that u bought it I regret not buying it but I ran outa money at that sale it was filled with nice stuff cheap

Nice pieces both, but they don't go together. Looks like you set the lamp down on something in your shop rather than like it belongs there. The stand really needs a machine tool on top of it, and the light needs a thinner support more in scale with what it has at the bottom.

Thanks guys. I think it could work with some tweaks but if I leave it as is I do believe it would not maximize the potential of both. I will sleep on it some more. I really do not want to short change these pieces.

As Ducksface stated...in the right combo these items could have some real value.

The light could go on top of traditional piling poles.

I think the light outside on some sort of post or stand would display it better, which would free up the cabinet for a tool related use, as others mentioned. Both awesome pieces.

Like a few others have already said, they look awful together but separately, they are both beautiful.

I hate to just **** all over it without offering a solution. Maybe a cast iron stand like this one would be better suited for your light.

thehorse13...funny you mention that...I just picked this stand up last week for $60
But I am not digging that as much. Although with some paint, accents, replace the steel top with wood it could work.
Im going to try it on top of some traditional wooden dock pilings. They are cheap, substantial, and can be cut to height. Could go indoors or out.

The green stand now has the matching wilton mounted on one side with a turbing roller mounted on the other. I will leave that alone for now.

That was a great sale. I also ran out of money...lol. We need more like that one.

Yeah it does work well. The machine stand is so heavy that you could roll some pretty substantial rings or arches without having to worry about it tipping. The extra dies also store well inside the stand.
