I replaced the torsion springs on my garage door today. Carefully followed the instructions on the internet and took my time. It only took about an hour of easy work. The winding sticks I ordered are the key to doing it safely, but they are only 1/2 rod, 18" long, so if you have some in your shop, you can save $9.00.
The door works excellent and anybody that can wrench should have no problem with this job.
Thanks for your support in my other thread.

Glad it all worked out. When you look back at how easy it really is, you realize that there is a lot of unnecessary amped up " don't do it!"

I wouldn't even bother replacing a torsion spring. Just buy a couple of the regular type and a little bit of cable.

It can certainly be dangerous if you do it wrong but it isn't really hard to do it right. The key is to make sure you research it like you did and it isn't such a big deal.

Glad it worked out for you.

Glad you learned how to before you started. The springs can really do a number in the hands of the wrong person.

Good job!

It's the same way with split rims and lock ring rims.

I love doing both my split ring and split rim truck wheels on all my old trucks and instaalling and replacing torsion springs on the doors.

Be educated about what you are doing and be safe doing it!

Save $$$ and say you did it and had fun doing it.

Tip: 3/8" socket extensions are pretty darn close to 1/2" diameter. I have a couple long ones I also used to numerous times to adjust a garage door.

One of my torsion springs busted out of the blue this week. I watched some vids on replacing them. One suggested getting new ones in both sides and a bit longer which will translate to more force helping open the door.

Strongly recommend replacing both! Especially if they're both the same age, plus it's the same amount of work.
Springs are determined by three things..
1- Wire size
2- I.D.
3- Length

All three of these directly coincide with the weight of your door. Changing any one of these is what generally gets people in trouble!

Good job, dude. There are a lot of unnecessary message out there regarding servicing a garage door, I'm not saying everybody can do it, I'm saying that there are other more dangerous tasks out there like how to proper working under your car w/o killing yourself.

No task is hard or difficult if you understand the procedures.
