Updates on my 20X20

I posted on another thread that I was starting my garage. So here it is after being painted. I have my classic white VCT, still waiting for the classic black to come in from Home Depot. I am actually filling the expansion joints with "bondo" this week, and putting the VCT down next week. I will be coating it with "Alpha Garages" Bondtite1107.. Ill post more pics as the garage slowly comes together..

Thanks Husker, I'd be lying if I said your garage wasn't at least a bit of inspiration..I can see why you like my colors lol.. The black VCT came in today I placed a couple down just to see how it will look.

I will likely out a door over the water heater and paint it to match the walls. I want to go pretty basic and not over do pictures/sign etc. I'm thinking of three pictures of my car on each side of the wall. I will be getting the white raised panel garage cabinets from OSH in the future.

I like the tiles...that will look really good once all completed. I did see on here once that someone put the tiles a 45 angle and looked cool too...either way it will look great! Keep us posted...

Nice looking garage! I'll be doing something similar to my walls as well... although I might throw in a 1" black stripe about an inch above the red (or have a thick black line and thinner red line..).
Should look real slick with the VCT tiles!

If you are planning on putting more then one stripe prepare to be patient and let the paint fully dry. I was surprised at the amount of time and attention to detail it took to complete my red/grey combination.

So today I finished filling the expansion joints with "Bondo". Now I know what you may be thinking..Bondo? Well It was a complete pain mixing scoop after scoop with the hardening agent. It solidifies in about 20 minutes. I then sanded the Bondo with a 24"x4" belt sander. It turned out absolutely fantastic and perfectly smooth.


So we started laying down the VCT. As you can see we are only half way completed. The most crucial part is to get your first tile down straight and just piece it together from there. We used the Armstrong glue. It goes down extremely thin with the recommended trowel. I looked at it wondering how this was going to hold. However it is ridiculously sticky and worked great.

Ill be posting more pics and more updates soon. I will be putting Wolverine's BondTite 1107 on for a top coat.

Interesting. What turned you on to Bondo? I'd like to read about it.

My 80+ year old slab is badly cracked in a couple places. So bad I will have to demo a 3x6x6 triangle out and replace it. I've been researching what to fill smaller but still up to 1/2" wide cracks with? Because of all this and a portion that is slanted, VCT is my flooring of choice too. Probably black and light gray in checkerboard but in 4 tile "checkers" if you get my meaning?

Got all the VCT in, there have been several post stating how simple it is to install. Let me tell you, it's very labor intensive. It took me my father and brother two complete days. Sure they lay down easy however we took a block of wood and gently tapped each side of each tile to firmly press it against another. Then all the cuts near the walls get rather tiresome, One hint, use a heat gun before making your cuts. I bought a VCT tile cutter at HD for $50.

We still have to put VCT on the step, and have decided on the black rubber border made by Roppe.

I just stuck that flag up with some double sided tape. Btw I bought the flag on Ebay for $4!! They have tons of auto related flags.. I want to say it's David Flags on Ebay,

I agree on putting a door over the water heater, but be aware that for the gas heater to function properly, plan for fresh air to get in. Either undercut the door or add a louvered vent in or above the door.

I have a few more steps that will cost $$ to comp?ete it. It looks great now, however I still have to move everything back in which will take away from the wow factor.

Regarding the Bondo I used it on the advicde of my father. I have never used a concrete patch like featherlight so I donmt really know how it would compare. I can tell you though that the Bondo is very time consuming and may not be practical for huge jobs.

I filled the expansion joints in 2-3 foot sections. It is rather gooey and dosent fill the joints completely. I thrn sandeed it down with the belt sander and re applied to the low spots, and sanded again for a perfect finish.

I also filled in tiny imperfections in the floor made by the homebuilder. I also filled in a stamp in the concrete that warned against coring it. It filled the letters and edge of the stamp nicely. The difficult part is mixing the Bondo w the hardening agent, and applying it before it "sets up".

Now that the VCT is no signs of any expansion joints or pivots in the concrete showing through the tile.

Hey thanks fellas.. Well I essentially copied the color scheme and floor from an old post on here. For all of you on the fence about VCT flooring.. DONT BE..it is amazing I love it. I like the clean look so someday a reproduction gas pump will complete it for me. Oh and the trashcan...well it is a red can which I cheated and put a craftsman sticker on it..shhhhhh don't tell!

I love it! So clean and simple. I actually think you should leave the water tank exposed. I can see why you would want to enclose it, but it doesn't look bad at all. Have fun finishing off the decor.

Don: Thanks bud I was fortunate enough to start with an empty garage which makes things a bit easier. My advice is to find a garage you like and literally copy it as much as possible.

Boxes of (45)12" x 12" Armstrong VCT tiles run $32.50 from Home Depot. So with my 20x20 garage I ended up using about 4 1/2 boxes of white and an additional 4 1/2 boxes of black. Also need a 5 gallon bucket of glue. It is very inexpensive. A high quality epoxy top coat will cost you though.
