Updating shower drain

So I tore out the old shower which consisted of 1in tiles on the concrete and this was the drain. What will be the easiest/best way if I want to put a shower pan in.

Cut it out. It's just a floor drain

That's odd --- was it tiled over at some point and the square drain trim just stuck on top of the round ?

Is this on top of a slab ?

Looks like you have not tore out the old shower completely. Appears to me you still have to tear out the mud pan? Have you gotten down to the epdm rubber or lead liner?

I'm assuming what we are seeing is the concrete floor in a basement.

Based on old rehab project, I wouldn't be surprised that this is a old house and what we are looking at is the floor drain.

Some time later, a shower was installed and and the drain was centered over the floor drain. They may have placed some cement of motor around the floor drain and then just placed the shower drain tail into the floor drain!

Had a friend who's kids purchased an old house with a finished basement. They always had a problem with getting a wif of sewer now and then. When they redid the basement they found the exact same situation that is in the photo.

This was the grate and the clear plastic sat on top of that, tile was up to the clear piece.

Home was built in the 80s

After looking at the drain aging, the bottom is actually threaded. Depending on where my new drain is located

Project has been really drawn out and put on the back burner quite a few times only working on it when time allows. But here is a picture dump. Still currently working on it. The bathroom pretty much doubled in size. As I moved the one wall approx. 3ft. It used to be along the one side of the shower wall. Was a very small and dingy bathroom we never used. The original shower was 32x32. Wish I had more pics of the original bathroom but as small as it was it was hard to get good pictures.
