We just had a new roof installed on our home, which was built in the late '40s. The roofer says we need to replace the service drop connection and install a pole that goes up through the roof. Right now the wires wrap up over the eaves to the roof where they are attached to what look like knobs. Roofer says Southern California Edison is responsible for doing that work. Is that right? Does Edison have to do that upgrade at its expense or do I have to hire an electrician to do it?

Call Socal Edison and ask them what part of it is their responsibility and what is yours.

The customer is responsible for the mast, weatherhead, conductors, & such, for overhead service, the PoCo will not install them, they only will connect their triplex to the customers conductors.

Page 74, your exiting is OK provided it meets the min clearance requirements. Here it has to be 12' over a drive, so at the old house I had to raise it to 24" above the roofline.

Big issue is that if you are not having any problems, don't bother. My folks house originally had three individual wires going to three insulators and then connecting to a weatherhead on a SE cable that ran down the underside of the eave and down to the meter.
The service was improved many years ago to two hot wires spiraled about the bare ground/neutral that was connected to one of the insulators. The other two insulators became unused at that point. I later replaced the SE cable and weather head, meter socket and disconnect with newer larger stuff, but replicated the SE under the eave with the weather head.
It sounds like the roofer is trying to get you to do something you don't need to do.
